Default Under Tank Heater

Hello my girlfriend and I are going to be taking home our hedgie in about 3 weeks and I have a question about heating. We currently have a 150W ceramic heat emitter in a 2x3 C&C cage. However we were also of thinking of getting an under tank emitter like this: http://tinyurl.com/csoyeb These come in different wattages, so which is appropriate for hedgie conditions? Also, are the different powered pads different in size? Does anyone have any experience with these?

I use an under cage heater for my hedgie on her large plastic rabbit cage. I have it lifted up about 6 inches off the ground though so it gets plenty of air flow under it. I use the medium temp one and it never gets much warmer than 95 degrees and it never makes the bottom of the cage much warmer than 80 degrees which cools the further it gets. I like mine quite a bit though I don't have it stuck directly to the bottom of the cage.

Heating pads and under tank heaters only heat the floor of the cage in the spot where the heater is. The whole cage environment needs to be at a suitable temperature. Heating pads are very warm so when they leave the heating pad area, the air feels even cooler because of it being so warm where they sleep. A far better and healthier option is a ceramic heat emitter which will warm the whole cage environment without having such a drastic change in temperature.

Seems to me that a 150W for that size cage would be fine (depending on the room temp and lamp position), but don't take my word for it. Since you already have the cage and heat emitter, put a thermometer on the floor of the cage and see what it reads. If it's over 80 I would get a fixture for your ceramic heat emitter that has a dimmer (like this one http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... Id=2753964) and/or a thermostat (like this http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... Id=2752604). Especially if that room doesn't stay at a consistent temp.
And obviously if it reads under 74 you could get another heat emitter because like Nancy said you need the whole cage to be comfortable. Once the whole cage is comfortable I think you can add a heating pad to make one spot a little warmer if you want to. Preferably their sleeping spot because their metabolism slows when they sleep. But I don't have experience with it, that's just what I've read in other posts.
