As I am setting up the cage for my hedgehog I am also testing the heating system. My current CHE setup is a 10" dome and a 100 watt bulb, along with a thermostat and thermometer. It seems as if the bulb cannot keep up and is not heating the cage properly, directly under the heat lamp only reached around 73F and only 75F in the igloo. Room temperature in my house ranges from around 65-67F. My cage is custom built and is 28" by 48" and is made of clear lexan. I am in the process of making a plastic lid for the cage, do you think that this would help trap in the heat enough for the temperature to rise more? Is my cage too big, should I get a second CHE setup? Would a 150 watt bulb be more sufficient? Any answers would be helpful as I am bringing home the new girl Friday!

Stupid question, but I totally forgot to try this myself once: Have you turned the dial on your thermostat all the way up, left the setup for 15 minutes, and then checked the temperature again? If that doesn't do it, you'll likely need another CHE and dome. Covering the cage with a plastic lid will probably help increase the heat, but it will also reduce airflow, which isn't good for the hedgehog.
Your best option is to add a second bulb to the other end of the cage. Lots of people with large C&C cages have to use multiple bulbs to heat the whole thing. Just get a second 10 inch dome and another 100 watt bulb. Hopefully your thermostat has more than one input plug so you can just regulate both bulbs with one thermostat. Let us know if that helps!

I am going to try the cover idea first since I was going to make one anyway and know that it is recommended all cages have a lid to prevent hedgehogs from escaping. Ventilation holes will be added about 1/2 way up the perimeter of the cage to ensure air flow just as if it was a plastic bin set up. Hopefully that will work and we will also be changing out the 100W for a 150W, I have one handy from my chickens set up. If not I will look into adding another CHE set up.

Make sure you keep track of the temperature under the 150w when it's on - I would really recommend doing the second lamp instead of a stronger bulb because it gets so hot under the higher bulb when it's on. Long cages usually need more than one lamp to really heat them evenly.

We were able to make a set up where the cover has two bulb set ups! We will also be adding some insulation under the cage to ensure no heat is being let out.
![]() I will be sure to post a picture of the custom set up when finished Last edited by Sarahgx__; 04-20-2016 at 04:41 PM. |
