Default What should her skin look like? dry? patchy?

We just got Sticky today. She is two years old. I have read and read, but when it comes to actually knowing what's right, I get a bit anxious. So - would you look at these pictures and tell me your thoughts? Should her skin look like this? Kind of dry and a bit flaky? Is it normal that her quills are exactly even everywhere? When a quill has fallen out, it had a little round ball on the end. That's good, right?sticky05.08.2011.15 (1024x768).jpg[/attachment:3e63dkql]sticky05.08.2011.12 (1024x768).jpg[/attachment:3e63dkql]sticky05.08.2011.11 (1024x768).jpg[/attachment:3e63dkql]

It looks very flaky.

I think she might have mites if she doesn't have thick quills.

You should really take her for a check-up at the vet. All animals should get a vet check-up when you first get them ^_^

Her previous family gave her Revolution monthly. Their little log shows she got it yesterday.

I'll call tomorrow to get her an appointment. She has a vet already, so I'll take her back there, unless someone else has a suggestion for someone in Lakeland, FL.

She got a vet check and she was OK-ed? Did you take her, or did the family take her? Did they provide proof of their vet visit, give you a vet record, etc of any kind?
I'm asking because Sticky's skin looks very dry. If she was OK-ed, then maybe it isn't mites but a food problem, or perhaps even an overbathing problem from her previous owners.
I'm not sure though, because I've never really had to deal with an excess amount of dry skin with Kashi... but I know several people have battled dry skin extensively on here. Perhaps one of them will come on and chime in?

It could just be general dry skin from coming out of winter, especially if the family didn't have a humidifier in the room where her cage was and didn't give her flaxseed oil or anything else to help. Flaxseed oil is a good way to help her skin, both by putting it on her food every few days (or every other day, just have to watch her poop so it doesn't give her runny poop), and by dripping some on her back. I know there's several members on here that use Sunshine Factor to help with dry skin, but never having used it myself, I'll let one of them tell you more about that if you're interested.

If you have only had her a couple of days, unless there is a concerning health issue, I'd hold off on the vet visit for another week or so.

It is best to go to the vet after you get to know her a bit and after she has gotten accustomed to her new home and is out of any stress related issues. This allows you to get to know what is normal for her and to be able to answer any questions the vet has.

If there is a pressing concern such as blood, sneezing, or anything that needs attention immediately, then take her now, otherwise wait until you've had her a couple of weeks.
