Unhappy Final Update on thumbelina and link to her blog so i dont have to keep posting.

Well the vets went ok so i have good and bad news:

Bad news is as follows:

she does have a serve mite infection turns out shes had these for a while

shes on pain killers cause its so bad and painful for her

she goes back for the next shot sat which will be revoultion (this vets a fan of it)

when there were gunna get a fecal exam cause she might also have ring worm

if she doesnt recover ok from treatment i have to consider putting her down

i cant hold her or anything cause it hurts her so bad so i have to wait till everything is fully gone. so the only way i can bond is with a shirt in there and by talking.

good news;

treatment is starting and im hoping for the best

now on to the old owner.

it has been a fight through email. shes saying shes never saw her sick and what not. i have it all attached and the email im sending in response.

thank you all for the support, heres to a speedy recover and all

also heres her blog ill be posting on there as here with everything going on.

I can't imagine that euthanizing her would have to be an option for a mite infestation, even a bad one. There have many hedgies that have recovered from horrible infestations before, even if it took a little bit. I would definitely get a second opinion from a different vet if your current vet is suggesting that as an option, to be honest.

If it's a matter of money rather than not thinking she'd recover from it, then I would suggest contacting the Hedgehog Welfare Society instead.

A couple other things to clarify...

- make certain that it is Revolution being used. Revolution is NOT a shot - only Ivermectin is given as a shot. Revolution is applied as a topical treatment only, between the shoulder blades, on the skin. If she's getting an actual shot, it's not the right medication.

- Ringworm is a fungal infection on the skin. The test for it is not a fecal exam. If I remember correctly, they use a Woods light and ringworm spores lights up underneath it. Are you certain the vet said it was ringworm? If they did and they're recommending a fecal exam for it, then I'm not sure what on earth they think they're doing. I would be very suspicious of this as well.

sorry let me clarify ive been angry didnt proof read:

shes getting tested for ring worm, and a fecal test

they both said if i dont want her to suffer after recover if it goes horribly wrong then to think about it

but we all have high hopes

also theres probably more wrong with her then seen so thats why next visit were getting everything done. he didnt want to pain her more or stress her out any more today. also she wasnt having any of it

yes it is revolution being used next round.

money isnt the issue for the following visits, its the fact her old owner did me dirty and then had the balls to say she wouldnt treat the poor thing till spring. and stuff. what excatally could the society do for me?

Thank you for clarifying. Just wanted to make sure of both of those things. You should be able to get enough Revolution from the vet on your next visit that you can treat her yourself at home at the proper intervals without needing to go back & pay for a visit. Revolution is easy to apply.

And I just wanted to check. As I said, I haven't heard of a mites infestation bad enough to cause that to be an option, so that doesn't sound right to me. I could be wrong though. I only mentioned the HWS in case money was the issue. If you were unable to pay for the vet costs, they would possibly be able to find a rescue who could take her & pay for them. But since that's not an issue, that's nothing to discuss further.

Ah ok! Makes sense! And yes I found that odd to with the mites but wouldn't surpise me if other things could be wrong also. The vet was shocked how horribly she was taken care of.

Thanks for posting and I'll be sure to follow up on her blog. I hope that there is nothing else majorly wrong with her. You should be able to put her in a little fleece blanket and hold her on your lap while you watch TV or something, if you like. She probably would like some affection even if she is uncomfortable. Within a few days she should start to feel better once the mites start to die off. I hope that she does not have ringworm or anything else!

I am also sorry that you have to deal with a neglected animal. I think I told you, that I was recently involved in a rescue. We knew that the hedgie had scratched his eye (due to a mite infestation) but we had no idea until we got him home that his entire eye was missing! Sadly, your situation is not the first I have seen. Good luck, and I hope she makes a full recovery!

i am so sorry, that is very hard. we had a similar problem. when i got him he was so itchy and i was told "hes adjusting to new scents" that was not the case, the poor thing was so uncomfortable. i let it go for afew weeks. when we went to the vet he too had mites, the treatment did work, he also did the shots, had to get a series of 3. it cleared him up pretty fast.. i hope you guys have the same success...it is a shame some breeders are seling sick hedgies.
