Default Thumbelina update

Thank you every one for the advice!. Turns out I was given a very sick hedgehog she is completely covered in mites and mite eggs. We rushed her to the 24/hr emergency clinic she still will see her new vet tomorrow. I'm upset in tears and angry. I will keep you updated further when I know more. God knows how long she's had these for but thank god she came into my hands

I'm glad you finally got her to the vet. Try not to be too upset. Mites are common among hedgehogs and chances are she may catch them again while she is living with you (I know you wouldn't do anything to harm her, but it happens).

Make sure the vet treats her with revolution and not ivermectin. Ivermectin has known reports of causing death in hedgehogs. Revolution is much safer.

Did they check her for a URI?

I think the best thing you can do for her now is to clean her cage thoroughly. If I remember rightly you were going to put her in a new, fleece lined cage anyway? Now would be a good time to make the switch. Her old cage could (and probably will) still have mites in the bedding and other accessories. If you have to put anything from the old cage to the new one, like the wheel, make sure you give it a good thorough cleaning first.

Unfounately her infestation was so bad we had to give the ivermectin orally (thank god)but when I got to the regular vet today I'm asking for the revolution. So far she's been doing ok and everything so I'm not to worried. I put the fleece blanket in. But after today's vet visit I'm getting ready of everything she was laying on. turns out everything else is fine with her but she came from a shity environment and a poor diet. I'll keep you all updated after thumbelinas visit with the regular vet today. I'm now exhausted after staying up all night with her to make sure she was eating and everything so ready for bed so in a few hours I will keep you updated but I'm off to dreamland

Dang. Since her ears are clean you may have wanted to push a full revolution treatment rather than any ivermectin. But what is done is done. My thoughts for a full recovery for your little one. Enjoy the change to fleece. It's not only easy to clean and warm and snuggly, but you may also find yourself wanting to redecorate all the time with so many patterns and colors available!

I thought that in the picture you posted of her, it looked like something strange on her face - which I thought might be mites, but then I thought, surely not...they would not show up in a photo like that. Was that really what I was seeing?
Good luck to you and her!

Another thought, when she sees her regular vet she probably should get a full exam with gas. It is impossible to fully examine a hedgehog when it is awake. They need to look in her mouth and check her teeth for any broken teeth, abcesses, etc. I hope that there is nothing else going on with her and that she fully recovers under your care. I hope you give the woman you got her from a piece of your mind. Do you mean the add from the "grad student" is still up? As for the breeder, see if they are on the list of recommended breeders here or on hedgehogwelfare.org. If she has more than 3 breeding pairs she must have a USDA permit. Good luck to you and Thumbelina.

Yea it's still up from the woman.. Right now the doctor thinks she might also have ring worm on top of the mites.. Trust me I'll post a copy of the email when I get the rest of the bills. Thank you everyone for the warm wishes I will be keeping up dates through a blog I'm making for her so it's easier for you all to check in!

Also I will ask for the full exam now

So went well right now we're treating for the mites and stuff next week when we come back for the revolution (which this vet highly loves) we'll do a fecal exam and check everything else out
