Default Mast Cell Tumors (plus our other trials)

Hi folks, it's been a while since i've popped in. The boys and I have been dealing with mites (we think) and one surgery. The vets have never actually seen a mite, but...

Ender - doing well. Was losing quills and had bad dry skin. Had some oral stuff and 3 rounds of shots (yes, I've read the post on ivermectin). I think we're under control, no more quill loss.

Calvin - has had the same 3 rounds, we're still losing quills. he had surgery to remove a bubble type growth on his leg and recovered well. He had a thorough exam while out, no sign of mites. Fungal test came up negative.

Anyway, purpose of this post. Took Calvin in to have his stitches out and for the vet to look at a lump on his side (left side, 3/4 inch above the hair/quill line). It's about the size of the end of the pinky finger. The vet aspirated it and called me not too long ago with the results. She said it looked like a Mast Cell Tumor, not something she's seen too often in hedgies and didn't find much in their research materials.

In dogs, she said the biopsies get graded and can range from benign to malignant. Ferrets, are usually not a problem. Hedgies? Those of you who've dealt with mast cell tumors, did they test them? Were they benign and localised or malignant?

Calvin seems fine. Eats, sleeps, runs, poops. We can poke at the bump and he ignores us. He's actually gained weight since his surgery (370 to 390). Still losing quills. I guess I have to decide about surgery (again)

I'd take a picture, but he's rather pissed off right now. I do trust this vet practice. I also know she consulted the other vets who normally see my hedgies (and the one that did the surgery)

Anyway, advice?

Hi jopenguin,

I just took my hedgie to the vet because she had a lump and it is a mast cell tumor. They told me the same thing- not a lot of research. The vet is contacting another hedgehog specialist.

What did you end up doing and what happened?

The original post is from 2011, I don't believe the original poster is active.

meeshnoll. I sent you a PM. But please start a new thread for your little one so that we can keep your little ones story as just their story. I'd be happy to compare notes of what I've encountered with MCT though.
