Default RE: Clipping Nails and other fun activities

Hi,

Long time reader, first time writer.

My girlfriend and I just inherited a hedgehog who is roughly 5 months old. Her roomate bought the hog, realized she had made a rash decision and promptly neglected the poor thing until the last couple of weeks.

We have been handling Penny frequently and have attempted to overcome the grumpiness that came with her not being played with enough. The problem is that she NEEDED her hind nails clipped. So we have attempted to do so, the problem is that we seem to be burning up a lot of the trust we have built up over the last couple weeks since we liberated her from my GFs roomate's closet but also, how do we convince her to let us clip?

I read online a number of "grab her leg and hold on tight" strategies but something tells me that there has to be something better than this.

ALSO, and I am not pleased to admit it, because she was so frantically attempting to avoid our clipping efforts, we clipped a little too close to her quick. She dropped a couple drops of blood but that seems to be all. I think we might attempt to bath her tonight since her feet are dirty.

Please help us A) have a better strategy for clipping Penny''s nails in the future and B) Explain to us if their is anything else we should do about her foot now that we have clipped too close.

THANKS,

The Penny Management Team

Congrats on your new prickly child

On the main page of this health section there's a hygiene section and Nancy has a post about nail trimming. Annabelle isn't cooperative in the slightest but I find making it a two person job is a lot easier. Usually I hold her when she's in a ball and Boyfriend takes one foot at a time and does it. Just keep trying and you'll find a way that works for all of you. If Penny is less than enthusiastic about it, don't try to do all 4 feet in one go. Or even in a day. Just do a few nails/one foot per night and make sure to give her lots of treats!

And don't worry about cutting the quick =/ I've done it...pretty sure it's happened to most. The best advice is to have some cornstarch or flour in a dish and dip the cut foot in it to stop the bleeding, just because anti bac human stuff stings a lot. It's usually no big deal!

Hope that helps

Welcome to HHC! Good for you for taking care of her! There are lots of different ways to cut the nails, mostly because they hate it. Some people will do it while in the bath. Some will wrap the hedgie in a towel like a burrito. Some will gently, but firmly grab a foot. Some will use distraction (mealworms) & others have willing hedgies that don't mind.
The key is not to get frustrated. Go easy & slowly. If you're stresses, than she will be too. Obviously try NOT to cut the quick, but it's not the end of the world. It's best just to start off by cutting a bit off. The quick will gradually retreat & you can clip more.
As was mentioned, you don't have to do it all at once.
Bribes are great.

Hope it goes well & we're here to help!
