Unhappy Sigh..Gizmo and very bad dry skin? I think...

So, tonight was Gizmo's turn to get his condo cleaned and I walk over to him and there are piles..literally..piles of skin under his liner! I have no idea how I could of missed this. I gave him an oil bath about two weeks because of some dry skin, but when I looked at him it was so much worse. He had chunks of dead/dry skin everywhere and he kept itching constantly! So I took him to the bath and put oil in the water and then I massaged what I could of the skin off with a toothbrush. He is also losing quills. I put baby oil on him after the bath to soak into his skin. He is also fairly chilly feeling. I put him in a bin next to my bed with hand warmers and a snuggle safe for right now. Do you think this is just severe dry skin? It is very warm in the warm and has been humid because of his numerous hibernation attempts we have to keep it extra warm, so I'm sure that is a factor..

Autumn and miserably itchy Gizmo

How old is he? If there's no possibility he's quilling, I'd suggest a vet visit to have him checked for mites or a fungus infection.

What's the temperature in his cage?

it sounds like he's affected with whatever LF has.

The room stays at about 76-79 because he tries to hibernate so much and it has been humid in there, so I'm not sure if this is dry skin or some sort of infection. I've had so many vet bills the past month I really don't have the money for an additional vet visit, but it sounds like I'm going to have to take him. I gave him an oil bath last night to see if it would help.

Have you tried Sunshine Factor? That's what the vet suggested for Snarf once we ruled out mites and parasites. He has big flakes falling off and has been losing more quills than usual...just dry skin, apparently.

That is what is going on with Giz. I have some sunshine factor...I think that is what it is. I will try that. Do you just mix it in their food? I've forgotten.

My vet said .05 cc mixed in with fresh food every two days.

But please keep in mind, we only discussed SF AFTER we ruled out all other causes of dry skin, so you may want to see a vet to get their 'blessing' first.

Baby oil actually makes dry skin worse.
So if that's all that you've been using, then that's probably your biggest problem.

Too much bathing also makes the skin that much dryer.

How does oil make the skin dryer?
