Default Quilling? Mites? Normal Quill Loss?

I've had my little guy for 5 days now and picked him up the day he turned 6 weeks old from a reputable breeder. He has lost probably a little over a dozen spines in the past few days - all the same length and size (relatively small - likely from around the sides near his belly). He hasn't lost any of the long spines from his head, back, and sides. None of the lost spines have the little follicle bulb at the end. Both sides are pointy and about the same rigidity of his other spines. He has a cloth liner in his cage and I find them in my shirt after he has been cuddling with me. It looks like he's starting to get new spines coming in all over. There are none of the immediate tell-tale signs of mites that I can see (crusting around the eyes, white spots on the skin, scratching).

I'm not sure if this is the start of his first quilling, a potential mite issue, or just tiny spines getting snagged. Any thoughts from the more experienced handlers?

Hmm. Perhaps I jumped the gun. After holding some of the lost quills under a flashlight, I finally noticed the little follicle bit on one end. They blend in with his quill colour perfectly so I never noticed by just casually looking at them. He does seem to have a bit of flaking skin on his paws but my apartment is incredibly dry and he's still getting used to his living conditions, so I'm guessing that is the possible cause. I would guess a humidifier would be a good idea for the little guy?

Follicles at the end of the quills mean nothing. They can still have the ball and yet have mites.

However, that being said. As long as you see quills growing back, then it's just quilling. An oatmeal bath will do wonders for quilling skin and help soothe the quilling process.
If you do a search(located upper right corner) for Aveeno oatmeal, you will find many threads on oatmeal baths.

Eventually, you may want to think about supplementing with flax seed oil(again, just do a search), but not until your hedgie has settled.
