I'm new to hedgies, but for dogs we usually recommended putting a little corn starch on the nail. It stops the bleeding pretty quickly. I don't think that would harm a hedgie.

Flour is ok. Buy some cornstarch when you can. It will bleed a lot but she will be ok. Don't panic. This happens a lot and is a part of grooming any pet.
I got yelled at the other night by my housemate because he has sole responsibility of trimming nails and he feels bad because he thinks they hate him when he accidentally trims the quick. So he wants them to hate me instead. It really is more traumatic for us, the trimmers, than for the hedgehogs. I promise.

I did this to Rose the very first day I had her. I had cornstarch on hand and she still bled through it. She barely noticed but I felt horrible. She was fine and healed fast.

I think it looks way worse than what it is! For some reason there's a lot of blood when you clip the quick- just make sure you have corn starch on hand

I always cry when I accidentally cut the nail too short, but it is really hard to cut a squirmy, prickly, and uncooperative hedgehog's nails. Its hard. But it was an accident and you didn't intentionally hurt her, so try not to beat yourself up.
I hope you are both okay.

thank you guys.

i dipped it in flour repeatedly and also applied some light pressure to it with the towel. it did stop eventually, of course.
it surely didnt seem to bother her as much as it bothered me!! she was up and running in her wheel for hours in the middle of the night!!
