Default Thoughts on dry skin and quill loss?

I mentioned awhile ago that Smee was having some dry skin issues that have, since I last posted, failed to clear up. He is also losing a moderate amount of quills now, maybe 5-8 per night, and some that come off when I pet him during cuddle time. He's also still got some dandruff. No bald spots or hair loss though. I treated him for mites with revolution about a month ago, so I don't think that's the issue. I have not noticed him itching at all or heard him scratching at night, but I suppose I can't completely say he isn't scratching at all since I am not always watching him.

Any thoughts on this? I know that as it is getting colder outside the changing climate could be a factor in the dryness...but quill loss makes me wonder if something else is up. Ideas?

Overly dry skin can cause quill loss. I keep a humidifier on in the hedgehogs' room during the winter months to help with the problem. I have also had to resort to using a little vitamin e or flaxseed oil on their backs.

But how old is Smee? Any major stress causing events in the last 2 months (rehoming, surgery, illness, diet change, etc)?

I use a humidifer in the winter too cause Spike has severe dry skin in the winter and every 4 days I put flax oil on his food which he always eats 1st. I tried the flax oil on his skin like some recommended but it made it worse for him so I do the feeding of it and it works wonderfully.

Okay! I will have to try the flaxseed oil. I believe there was a post on where to get it and how much to give recently, so I'll have to go find that.

Kalandra, Smee is about five months old now...this is his first winter season as he was born in the spring. I actually did move him from my home in the cities to my college home up north a little over a month ago...initially he was eating and drinking a bit less than normal, but he has since adjusted pretty nicely I think. The quill loss only started a few days ago.

I asked about age in case he could be going through his 1 year quilling. The stress thing because I have had hedgehogs who stressed from major life changes or illness drop quills a couple of months after the "problem" was over. In each case the hedgehog was extremely stressed and then were already "settled" and life seemed great, then their bodies finally decided it was time to shed the quills.

Oh my! That sounds like it could likely be part of the issue then. Poor guy... I will pick up some of the oil to help with his dry skin in the meantime, though. Thanks you guys!
