I've had 4 hedgehogs in my life, and none of them have made these noises. Pokipsi is 3 years old, and in the last year she's started making a high pitched whistle type noise. She only seems to make it when she's asleep, and she always rolls up like she's scared or hurt, but when I pick her up she unrolls and looks around and acts like she's fine. I'm a nurse, and I haven't found anything amiss - poop is normal, pee is normal, eating and drinking are normal, walking is normal, no skin problems.
Then today she made the same noise, and when I checked on her she did the same thing. I went back to what I'd been doing, and she made the noise, and then made a machine-gun like noise with it and just kept going. I'd never heard this before and, concerned, I went to see her. When I touched her she didn't really react, so I got really concerned. I sat down and reached in to pet her again, and she rolled up and then unrolled and acted like her normal self again. And then went to eat. Has anyone ever heard noises like this from a hedgehog? Is it that she's having bad dreams? Is there a health problem that it might indicate? Like I said, absolutely nothing else has changed about her. I just don't know what to think. |

well, I'm a brand new hedgehog owner (I've only had Paprika for a week) but I spend alot of time in my room with her sleeping and I've heard what you're talking about. Some nights when she's sleeping on my lap after awhile she'll start making that high pitch squeaking breathing sound, at first I was nervous because I was scared she had an URTI or something, but when I move her around alittle to wake her up she stops making the sound and shifts around like nothing happened. I listen closely and she never makes that breathing sound when she's awake, its always while she's sleeping.. so who knows, maybe hedgie snoring or dreaming???v
