gnat attack!

out of no where our apartment has become quickly taken over by gnats.
i threw out all of our unsealed dry goods.
we've been bleaching our drains at night along with plenty of boiling water.
homemade vinegar traps have been set up everywhere, and while they work, they are not wiping out the problem.
we don't have fruit out.
we take out the trash daily.
i've been spot cleaning hedgehog poop, and of course the get fresh water and food daily.
i've been scrubbing wheels like crazy.
their food mix is kept in a big sealed lidded jar.

...but i can't seem to shake these gnats, and they are worse by the hedgie houses. i find them on their poop constantly.
our apartment is clean, even more so since this started. so i can't figure it out. this has been going on for a few weeks now. i'll think i have it licked and then it will be terrible again.

anyone have a hedgehog safe suggestion that hasn't been listed above?

Remove all the potted plants.

Locate all sources of moisture (wet bedding in the cages, a damp spot under the sink, etc) and remove the problem.

Degrease your drains by filling them with dishwasher liquid (not dish detergent) and pour boiling water down them. Pay close attention to the tub drain and make sure all the hair is removed from that drain.
