Talking ongoing dry skin, quill loss and now lethargic and vomit

As you may recall Sylvie has been dealing with ongoing dry skin and quill loss. We think it's fungal as an anti fungil has temporarily resolved the issue in the past. April her weight was about 600 g coming of the antibiotics. Between those and my being up late (less wheel running) she had put in some weight she needed to loose. With a change in schedule and an increase in the low fat foods in her daily meal, the weight started coming off.

Last night however about 2am I got up to find she'd not been up. I took her out, she was warm but lethargic, and fell asleep in my lap. She weighed in at 495 g.

We went to the vet today but the nearest exotic specialist is 2 hrs away and currently on vacation until end of next week.

Vet I saw gave the same prescription I had before - to manage the skin condition until I get to my regular vet.

After a 45 min drive back home I opened the carrier to find Sylvie had pooped and vomited. While the poop reassured me (she didn't last night) she's never vomited before.

I gave her a little water from a syringe. For a while she
was laying quiet on my lap with her head propped up on a pillow. Now she's back in her cage and lying on the floor by her wheel. She is responsive and cage temp is 24*c working to get back to 25*. She is now 488g just before I put her back.

I need to be at work in one hour and not sure what I can do to help her. Suggestions?

Oh I put her water dish back in the cage but no food.

Do you think the vomiting could have been from the car trip?

I don't know. She's been on much longer car trips and hasn't had a problem.

I'm concerned and the skin condition combined with weight loss, lethargy and now vomiting.

I recently went on a three hour car trip with my boys and all but one of them ended up vomiting. Motion sickness from the car is very common in hedgehogs and sometimes they get it and sometimes they don't; for example, Charlie was fine on the way down, but ended up getting sick on the way back.

For the quill loss and such, my little foot has been experiencing that since I got him last November and I took him to two different vets thinking it was mites; however, he always tested negative. I just recently found out that it has been ringworm all along. If it doesn't clear up have a culture done for ringworm and see what the results are. He has been on medicine for 4 days and I can't believe how much energy he has back!

Good luck to you!

What medication is he on?

When I go for work I won't be back until almost 11. There's no more vomiting. Do you think its ok to put a small amount of food back in?

He is on Miconazole lotion twice a day.

When Charlie was vomiting I never took food away. I always gave him the option to eat if he wanted too but made sure he had plenty of water. Mind you, Charlie threw up once daily for about 3 days then stopped, but I did have him to the vet before that when he was throwing up constantly.

Thank you. I will look into a ring worm test. I'm rather a lotion over oral meds

No problem! I am happy to help. I am with you on the lotion over oral meds. My #1 choice is topical. Ringworm's symptoms is very similar to mites except they don't USUALLY loose quills to where they get bald spots. But remember, to each his own.

So I've checked with my regular vet. A year ago Sylvie's test came back negative for ring worm and other fungases. That said it's only been the oral antifungal that provides her temporary relief.

My suspicion in the past has been ring worm as I had a case when I originally got her tested. Is it possible that she had/has it but the test still came negative?

I was looking around online and found some sites recommending using Canestine (which is a Micro. Based cream) to treat ringworm in hedgehogs. Does anyone have any thoughts on this or no of safe over the counter treatments?

Has she had a fecal test for parasites?

Is she eatting normally?

Weight loss coupled with lethargy & malnutrition (which would explain the dry skin) in an animal that's eatting normally and has no other signs of illness can sometimes be caused by intestinal parasites, particularly in carnavours.
