Default >: Sick Hedgie?

Life decided to kick me in the gut this week. Several times.

So aside from other problems that life dumped on me, my new hedgehog Hedgeworth seems to be ill. His poop has progressed from normal to softer and lighter-colored, to yellowish-brown and mucous-y. I will go and try to find canned pumpkin when I wake up. Will baby food work as well? If so, what kind would you recommend?

He's still eating and drinking, but I found out the hard way that he pees while he poops - I don't know if this is normal. I realized I may have put too much new food into his dish so that might have upset his stomach... Also, he had 2 mealworms and half a pupa the night before yesterday.

I'm hoping this is only because of too much sudden food/water change. I don't want him to be sick ;_; Feeling really crappy right now... I also feel like such an idiot...

It is probably from the food and water change. Just keep him on the kibble he was used to eating and don't add any treats, or food changes for a couple of weeks. Let his tummy have time to settle down. Then you can give him a very small amount of a new food or treat, one at a time and then wait a few days to see if it's upset him.

Agreed with Nancy. Also, about the potty thing - I assume it's normal. Watson does it too

Thank you Nancy and Beanie. I forgot to tell you that he just makes a mess all over the fleece blanket he sleeps under. It's pretty worrying (and gross) to see poop smeared all over it.

I had a check this morning and found a poop in the litter box (yay!) so I hope that's signs of him learning to use it, even if he still pooped in the blanket while I was sleeping. However, the poop I found in the litter box is more green than yellow and while it still looks like it's mushy, it is more properly formed as opposed to the pea-like messes he's been making for the last two days.

I'm going to assume the green is a better sign than yellow. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

He's still eating and drinking so that's a good sign at least.

re baby foods: hedgies are very individual when it comes to their likes and dislikes. i've tried several, but Sweetie accepted only pumpkin & corn. but i stopped giving it to him because i don't really want him to eat corn. some hedgies really like sweet potato baby food.

Thanks fracturedcircle.

Hedgeworth seems to be in better shape now. Now if only he could quit pooping under the blanket and then sleeping with it... >_>;

Thanks everyone.
