Post MITES!! NOOO!! Help

I brought Lola home last Thursday. I have been letting her settle in and not hold her too long each day since she is very cranky and not well socialized.

Today I was holding her and managing to trim some of her curled nails. She was balled up and would stick a foot out here and there she was doing really well considering. I noticed around her rump looked pretty flaky. I kinda scratched at it and wiped it on the dark purple cloth she was on. I looked really close to examine the flakes and sure enough I saw teeny tiny white spots move. I about died and my heart sank into my stomach, I want to cry. Poor Lola. How long has she been living with this....?

I don't see her scratch herself. Sometimes I hear scratching in her cage but I thought it was burrowing in her bedding and whatnot. Being a first time hedgie owner I don't know what to expect. She is on carefresh bedding, her previous owner used it too.

I am calling the vet tomorrow and will be taking her in at the first availability. I *really* hope the doc isn't on vacation or something.

My questions are:

How contagious are mites? Will my Cats and other animals (see siggy) get them too?
Is it easy to get rid of with revolution?
Could this contribute to her crankyness?

I love her so much and can't bear to think of how long she has had to live with this.

Im sorry to hear Lola has mites. I've seen a lot of stories where the Hedgie did great after getting the Revolution for Kittens and that Ivectmin is a big no no cause its caused problems with other hedgehogs. I believe they can spread to other surfaces and other animals but hopefully someone who is 100% will answer. I'd probably try to find a quarantine area in your home that would be very easy to wipe down and with no carpets so that the mites won't try hiding out. You might have to pull the liners and wash everyday until they are cleared up just to make sure that when you are treating her that they don't try to get back on her. I hope the appointment goes well and I'm sure you'll have Lola feeling better in no time

Lola has an appointment on Friday. I don't have a suitable quarentine area so I am going to foster my herps with friends. I am sick with grief and hope I can get my poor babe well soon. I will talk with the doc about treating my cats as well.

Who here has had to deal with mites? How long did you have to deal with it? What was your cleaning regimen? Please share (or link me to your thread) your experience...

Read Nancy's sticky on not allowing Ivermectin to be used for the treatment of mites. I would ask Nancy what she uses to clean cages. There I go again Nancy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to the vet last night and got some revolution. You should have seen that slide (from the skin scraping, they were real nice and let us go back to look through the microscope)! It was a freakin mite orgy. The doc said she has probably had them all her life. He was surprised I was able to notice with my naked eye. I'm supposed to go back in 18 weeks to do a check up and see if I was able to eradicate this infestation.

This was the best vet experience I've ever had in my life. I usually walk out of a vet thinking they have no people skillz or I didn't like how they handled my pet, etc. I am so happy and relieved for Lola that we are taking care of this!

Finally a break $$$! We went to the craft store today (since I will be changing her cage lining daily) and they were having a 50% off sale for fleece. I got a cool bug pattern.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. Lets keep our quills crossed that I can kick this for her.
