We were making calls to vets in the area...and were unable to find any in the area that treat them that were in this weekend they kept giving me other #s to try we were going to take him to Cornell... but before we could he stopped breathing .
I don't know what we did wrong he liked to climb the walls of his cage and fell a few times but when I went to the pet store to get different housing they said a cage was the best
My 6yrs old and our whole family is devestated .
Is there something we did wrong with housing we followed all the info on care we could find ??

I'm very sorry for your loss. Sadly, when they start to gasp, they are doing their final breaths and nothing can help but a vet can help them cross quicker.

How long have you had him?

A plastic bottomed wire cage is the best and yes sometimes they do climb. There are ways to make the cage climb proof. Weaving stiff plastic or cardboard in and out of the lower bars will make it so they can't climb. Usually after a few months you can remove the plastic/cardboard and they still think they can't climb.

He could have sustained an injury from climbing and falling. That might explain the hibernation attempts. Depending on how long you've had him, he could have been ill when you got him. He could have been too cool. Heating pads alone won't keep a whole cage warm but providing him with the heating pad and he should have warmed up and shown improvement.

There are many possibilities and you will never know the reason. Hedgehogs can go downhill very quickly and by the time they show symptoms they are very ill. It can be very difficult sometimes to recognize the symptoms especially new owners with a new hedgehog.

Hugs

Thank you for the support ... We had him about six weeks . We would bring him every night to run around and play... its funny when I would walk out of the room he would follow me , he would also get reight into my 6tyrs olds hand when he opened the cage to get hime out. We just did some modifing to the cage this week but maybe we were too late. I did contact our breeder for advice and to tell her what was going on she was very supportive.
We are going to give it a few days before we talk about getting another one, Its hard to have a little one go through this type of loss especially when they see us cry too.
Thank you again
