Talking HELP is it mites or just dry skin?!

Hi, my name is Laura I just recently got my hedgehog Sno he's a year old and I noticed when I got him that I could see his skin through some parts of his quills and it looked kinda dry but I thought maybe that's how they looked all the time. Well yesterday I looked up what that might be and it said he might have mites but it doesn't look really bad like some of the photos I saw and he isn't loosing any quills (well he lost one, but just one) and then today after he woke up I noticed his bed was all covered in dry skin flakes and he got some all over the couch too when he was running around. I hope it's just dry skin. I just gave him a bath with Aveeno Bay Shampoo hopefully that helps! I took some photos so maybe you can help me and tell me what it is?

Is he itching at all? If not, I'd say it's just dry skin. What do you use for bedding and what are you feeding him?

Because his quill loss appears to be localized to that one spot on his back, I would not immediately suspect mites. Typically, the type of mite that affects the body of a hedgehog is a burrowing mite (such as a subspecies of S. scabiei) which causes the hedgehog to scratch to relieve the itching sensation they cause.

Oatmeal baths, vitamin E oil, and Sunshine Factor are three wonderful solutions for dry skin.
A proper diet and housing conditions (ex. bedding) are also important as wood shavings can irritate the skin of a hedgehog and they can also harbor mites.

I would say treat the dry skin by making sure he is on a proper diet and bedding in addition to trying one of the solutions I listed above. If his spikes continue to fall out or his dry skin does not improve, then a visit to the vet is a must as mites can cause secondary infections.

Sunseed Vita Exotics is not a good staple food (or any food labelled as being for hedgehogs for that matter). You want to be feeding him a mix of at least two different high quality cat foods.

Here is a list of dry cat foods that meet a hedgehog's nutritional requirements:

Blankets and sheets are a good choice for bedding! Fleece, flannel, and cotton are all wonderful and lighter in color is preferred as this way you can see any changes in the color and/or contents of your hedgehog's urine and/or feces.

If your hedgehog is not scratching then I wouldn't suspect that mites are responsible for his dry skin.

But he won't eat cat food, he just looks at it.
