Styx attempted hibernation about 90 minutes ago when I first took him out of his oatmeal bath (he was recovering from a mite infestation - he's fully recovered from it now). From what I've read I am supposed to hold him next to me on a heating pad until he tries to unroll. While I was holding him I had noticed that he had urinated on my hands so I checked on him yet he still seemed to be unresponsive (besides light breathing and a very slight twitch from me touching him). I put him back in his cage, while I was doing this he let out one huff and curled more tightly into a ball, but then he seemed like he had returned to his unresponsive state again. I set him on a heating pad in the cage with the heat lamp on and he looks like he's sleeping, he doesn't appear to be hibernating, but he's still not fully responsive. He is breathing normally and isn't in as tight of a ball.
Is it possible that he came out of hibernation and directly went to sleep? |

Okay, Styx has come uncurled and walked around for a while (he looked really groggy and confused) and then went back to his box and fell asleep.
Is this normal behavior? I plan on staying up all night to monitor him. Is there anything else I can do? Please respond ASAP. |

What is his cage temperature? Did you dry him thoroughly after the bath and keep him warm until he had completely dried?
Keep a close eye on him, check his belly often to make sure it's warm. After a hibernation attempt, hedgies are likely to have another attempt, so you need to make sure he doesn't get cold. |

Agreed with Sar-uh's questions and comments. Sleeping after a hibernation attempt is pretty normal, and he might be a bit less active tonight as he recovers from it. Keep his cage temp a degree or two warmer, and make sure there's no breezes to chill him.

In response to Sar-uh: His cage temperature is generally kept at 76°F but it is currently at 79°F. I dried him off and sat with him for a half an hour, I'm not confident that his underbelly got dried off enough. I plan on monitoring him all night to make sure he is okay. Right now he is laying on his belly on the heating pad and sleeping.
In response to Lilysmommy: His cage is being kept at 3°F higher than usual. The sides of the cage are plexiglass so there are no breezes. Thank you for your responses. |
