Default Eyes scratched out

Hi everyone. my hedgie recently scratched its eye out and i’m not very clear on what to do. I’m aware that hedgehogs damaging their eye and even losing them is common? I’m aware it happens. However, i still don’t really know what to do. maybe some personal feedback would help.

Last night, i saw one of his eye completely dug out by him. his hind leg had blood too. the blood was already dried. His injured eye was also dried.
The next morning, i took him to the vet. His injured eye was a little wet and the blood from the night before was still there.(he kept huffing when i tried to clean it up) The vet gave me some kind of antiseptic eye drops to put twice a day, and nothing else. The vet also mentioned that if the eye doesn’t heal and close up, i’ll have to bring my hedgie back next week to stitch the eye area closed.
It’s currently the same night i took him to the vet. I noticed there is fresh blood around the eye socket. I’m afraid he’s still scratching it? I’m not sure what to do now. Do i bring him back to the vet, or continue the eye drops? I cant clean him because he is extremely sensitive right now..
Sorry if my explanation is unclear. Feel free to ask questions!

I’d take him back to the vet. If he’s still scratching then there’s an issue. Maybe a tumour that’s been annoying him, which caused him to scratch at the eye.
Or maybe an infection, maybe allergy, it can be a lot of things.

I’d take him back and ask the vet to run tests. Maybe a blood sample or skin sample from the socket itself. Maybe an X Ray or an MRI, or a Cat Scan even.

Although it is common for hedgie’s to loose their eyes, I haven’t heard of a hedgehog scratching it’s own eye out before. Though that’s just me.

I can’t imagine what it must be like to wake up and see that. I hope you’re holding up ok, and your hedgie aswell! Best wishes!

thanks a lot for the reply! i’m planning to go back to the vet to get some tests done. might get the surgery to stitch the eye area if nothing else is bothering him 🙂
