Default Swollen throat

Hi,

I recently left my hedgehog with my mom while I went away for the weekend. My mom has cared for her before with no issues.

I got back last night, and noticed my hedgehog was scratching her chin. I see her scratch herself sometimes, so thought nothing of it. I woke up this morning and her throat is swollen.

I also noticed that my mom switched out my usual cage cleaner for soap and water (smells like a fairly high concentration of soap). I usually use greenworks, thoroughly rinse several times, then let the cage dry. Her cage and wheel get cleaned daily, with spot checks at night to scoop up any poop before she can run in it. I've owned two hedgehogs now and never had an issue with this method. There is no scent left behind after the rinsing and scrubbing.

Could the soap have caused this? I'm thinking maybe my mom used the soapy water solution and then figured she didn't have to rinse the cage afterwards, and maybe my hedgehog licked some? My mom's not answering my questions as she's at work right now.

She's eating and drinking but not running as much as she normally does. I'm going to have a look tomorrow and if it hasn't gone down, she'll be heading to the vet.

I would rewash the cage the normal way and see if that helps. She may be alergic to the soap.

I agree with belties. Wash her cage normally, wash her too, she might have gotten some on her that is bothering her. Ask your mom too. Hope this helps

Thank you everyone! I washed her cage and gave her a bath. She's still very grumpy, but I'm hoping she comes around before tomorrow. Apparently her cage was rinsed well from the soap, but judging by the concentration of soap to water in the spray bottle, I doubt all the soap was properly rinsed.
