Default Scratching

Hi! My hedgehog is about four and a half months old. This is my first hedgie so I don’t know what to do. Every night when she’s running around in her cage, I hear her scratching a lot. She scratches a lot at night, and sometimes when I get her out to play. I use fleece liners and don’t have any wood so I don’t think it’s mites. What should I do? Is she just itchy from quilling or is it more? How do I treat it?

She may just have dry skin. Hedgehogs are prone to it. You can try bathing her with an unscented baby wash that has oatmeal in it. A lot of people seem to enjoy the Aveeno one. I use just plain old fashioned oats wrapped in a washcloth.

You can even soothe dry skin by adding a very small (and I stress very small) amount of coconut oil to the rinse water during bath time. Careful though, she will be slippery.

For me, my house tends to just be very dry. I have to lotion myself constantly so I know I gotta keep an eye on her too.

If you try some things to relieve dry skin and the problem persists you may need to get her checked for mites. They are sneaky little buggers and can find their way in sometimes.

Hope this helps,

Thank you! I use the Aveeno soap already.
