Default I need help, first hedgehog

Hi everyone! I’m new here and a new hedgehog owner, yesterday I adopted a hedgehog from a girl who could not take care of him anymore. It was cold outside so we hurried to get everything in the car, when we got home I turned on his heater and took him out to organize his stuff. He did not move at all or make a noise, the girl who I got him from told me it was normal because he’s a heavy sleeper. I kept him warm before putting him on his cage, I checked him this morning but he did not move at all from the spot I left him on last night. I am worried he might of already been in hibernation when I got him

Hi there, what is the temperature of his cage?

Have you actually seen him out of a ball since you went and collected him? Does he huff, puff or hiss when you approach his ball? Did he not drink or eat anything during the night then? Was there complete darkness in his cage and the room he is in during the night?

His cage temperature is 77.3f but during the night when I checked it was 78f. He is not curled up in a ball and has not been since yesterday, he does not make any noise when I pick him up or move at all, the girl told me he was pretty active hours before I picked him up. I had a black light over his cage because she told me that’s how she had the cage set up. Thank you for responding!

If he's not curled in a ball then he's not hibernating. I hate to ask this but is he still breathing? You should be able to see his chest rising and falling.

Are you sure they did not sell you a dead hedgehog?

It would be really messed up if they did but it could’ve also gone into hibernation in the drive back home (20 mins) but he was never curled up, he was uncurled since I picked him up

So you never saw him move, correct? Did you touch him when you first received him from the seller? If so, did he move at all (hiss or pop)? If you saw absolutely no movement from him, I would suspect something fishy from the seller. Did you pay for him?

I'm sorry to hear he passed away.
It all sounds very odd to me. If he wasn't balled up ever then he didn't enter hibernation. How cold is the outside temperature? So when you held him he never moved, were his eyes open, did you ever see him blink? It does sound like he was either very sick when she handed him to you if he was that lifeless or had already sadly passed. I hope this girl didn't take money from you. The poor hedgehog

I did poke him when I put him in the car but he did not move and the girl said it was because he was sleeping, I honestly didn’t think much of it. The temperature outside was around 70 something degrees but it was higher inside the car. We took him out of his cage when we got home but did not move at all, I sent a text to the girl and she told me it was normal when they’re scared and mentioned that happened to her when she first got him, I paid $200 for him but I’m sure if I tell her something she’ll say she gave it to me alive. I will know better for next time!
