Default Two of my boyfriend?s hedgehogs died unexpectedly in their shared cage last night...w

My poor boyfriend is beside himself. He woke up this morning to find two of his three hedgehogs dead. These two particular hedgehogs shared a cage; the third has a separate cage and seems to be doing just fine.

Some backstory:

Boyfriend got hedgie #1 (Bernice) from a local lady who rescues them. Bernice has always been a grumpy gus; clicking and hissing from the moment you touch her until the moment you put her back in her cage. Boyfriend assumed that since she was a rescue and acts so terrified/pissed off all the time that she must have been pretty horribly abused.

Hedgie #2 (Patrick) is actually not my boyfriend?s. He came from a breeder who was interested in diversifying her line, and agreed to give Boyfriend a baby hedgie (hedgie #3, Snowball) in exchange for breeding Patrick with Bernice.

Well this morning, Patrick and Bernice were just mysteriously DEAD. Now, I know pretty much diddly squat when it comes to hedgehogs. But from what I do know, it seems Boyfriend was doing a decent job. Certainly decent enough that he shouldn?t have expected that they?d both just die overnight, at the very least. He was diligent about keeping them warm, fed, and watered. He handled them a lot, more than I thought maybe he should considering Bernice?s obvious desire to be left alone, but again I don?t know much of anything about the critters, and Boyfriend seemed to be under the impression that handling them as much as possible would make them more trusting towards humans and all that good stuff.

So I don?t know. I?m super confused and feel terrible for my boyfriend. I?m hoping that someone may have some sort of answer. Obviously a necropsy is the only way to know for sure, so I suggested it to him but I?m not sure if he?ll do that.

Side note? Boyfriend has really terrible pneumonia at the moment. I feel crazy for even wondering this, but is there any possible way there?s a connection of some kind? Keep in mind that the baby hedgie, Snowball, is alive and well. It?s just flipping strange and now I?m worried some toxic mold is growing in his room and killing all of them off slowly.....or something. Idk. I have no idea, so any information would be so greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the rambliness of this post. It?s been a stressful day.

Hedgehogs are solitary animals. They should not be caged together regardless of gender. They are very territorial and you never know when a fight will arise.

The only way to know why they died would be to have a necropsy done.
