Hedgie has been chewing on quills?
Hi there, I recently got a new hedgehog a few weeks ago - and yesterday I started introducing CSFCLS to him. I realized however, that he was allergic, after small red bump/rashes appeared on his body and stopped feeding him the food immediately.
However, since last night (after I removed any of the CSFCLS kibbles from his bowl that remained), I noticed that his rump area stayed red-ish. I assumed that it was because of the fact that he's quilling (or towards the end of his quilling phase) and it was just irritation from his allergy plus the quilling. However, as I played with him today, I noticed that he was quite preoccupied with chewing on his quills near his rump. He got into the position to self-annoint, but instead proceeded to bite onto his quills and start pulling them out. I'm worried that the irritation near his bottom is because he's been pulling out his quills ( a lot of them are adult quills I think, because he's having trouble pulling them out - a lot of them are broken in half)
Age: About 10 weeks old
- I've owned him for about 4 weeks
Changes: Different color of fleece lining / tried to introduce CSFTCLS last night, but had allergic reaction
Temperature: ~76 degrees
Lighting: ~ 13 hours of light, 11 of darkness (there's some natural light in the room)
His poop was a little bit less firm - which I assumed was from his allergic reaction / introduction to new food.
Urine is normal
No sneezing/licking nose/ mucous
Eating his normal food
- How many kibble per day? (kibble is too small to count)
Same water intake
His skin is fine other than the red irritated area he's been chewing
He does however have a small red area here and there on his belly (appeared right after eating the CSFCLS - so I assume it's just the remnants of the allergic reaction)
He also has a small brown spot on his belly that appears somewhat dry - or like a mole? It just appeared after eating the CSFCLS as well.
Activity is normal - still runs on wheel for the same amount of time at night and likes to craw everywhere- but will periodically stop and chew his quills.
Edit: There's a little bit of... pus? In the area he's been biting - it looks like it's draining a bit - but not too much.

Personally, I would take him to the vet. Good on you for noticing the allergic reaction, but he might need some assistance as everything leaves his system. He might need something to help with the reaction and the itchy, as well as possibly some antibiotics since pus is usually a sign of infection.
