Default Large Lady

Hello, I'm Lyndsay, I have two hedgehogs named Pine Fresh and Penny. Pine Fresh will be a year old this Sunday. I've had him since he was eight weeks old and he's been wonderful. He's outgoing, friendly with everyone and very very relaxed. He's fit, healthy, and has mild to no smell.

Penny, however, is a different story. Penny was brought home by my boyfriend's little sister in March, and now she lives with me and my boyfriend. She was about nine weeks when she was taken from her mom, and this is our first night with her here. She's been on the same diet as Pine Fresh (blue buffalo cat food) but she is very different from him. In the past two months she's gained a significant amount of weight, and is twice the size of Pine, who is an adult. She also has a sharper, much stronger odor than he does. Would there be any particular reason for the weight gain and odor?

Note:

They have the same diet (blue buffalo cat food)
They both have and use their wheels nightly
Her cage is a 3 foot by 2 foot
She has had no strange behavior and doesn't gorge her food
She looks healthy in every other aspect than the weight

Some hedgehogs need to be on different diets. What Blue Buffalo are you feeding?

The problem could be with either of your hedgehogs. You might have one who loses weight easily (Pine Fresh), or one who gains weight easily (Penny). You will want to get Penny onto a low fat diet.

Some low fat foods:
Innova Adult Cat Light
Blue Buffalo Weight Control Management
Chicken Soup For The Cat Lovers Soul Adult Cat Light

As for the smell, some hedgehogs do have a stronger smell than others. But that's not something I'm familiar with. Does the food you're feeding have fish in it?

Pine used to be a bit heavier, but he looks better now and is more active at night since I got the wheel about six months ago.

The food I have them on is blue buffalo high protein grain free. "Wilderness."
It doesn't contain fish.

I'll try one of the others for Penny and see if it helps.

With the smell, it's certainly different than his, but seems unusually sharp. Almost like she's stressed all the time, which could be a factor because she's much much more timid than he is.

Blue Buffalo Wilderness isn't good for hedgehogs. The protein is too high in that line of food. There are 4 different "Chicken Recipe" foods from that line.

Wilderness™ Chicken Recipe for Adult Cats
Crude Protein: 40.0% min
Crude Fat: 18.0% min

Wilderness™ Chicken Recipe for Kittens
Crude Protein: 40.0% min
Crude Fat: 20.0% min

Wilderness™ Indoor Chicken Recipe for Adult Cats
Crude Protein: 38.0% min
Crude Fat: 16.0% min

Wilderness™ Chicken Recipe for Mature Cats
Crude Protein: 38.0% min
Crude Fat: 14.0% min

All of those foods are too high in protein for hedgehogs and too high in fat (excluding Mature Cats) for most hedgehogs. The protein shouldn't be over 34%, I prefer to keep the protein under 32%. The fat should normally be under 15%, most people aim for 9-12%. I'd change both of their foods.

Maybe Penny is just an amazon.

From what I've learned by reading this forum (and I've been reading like I fiend!) hedgies come in all sizes. Check out this thread and you'll see what I mean:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that as long as Penny can close completely in a ball, she isn't over weight.

Do you have a scale? If so what does she weigh in grams?

Dangit, I hope they can deal with a change, they're crazy for their food, haha. XP

I would understand big, but this girl has a serious fat roll, which makes me think overweight. Sadly, I do not have a scale, but I'm going to take both of them to the vet for a check up. She looks and feels like a bag of jelly. XP she certainly balls up just fine, but her poor little legs are so stubby compared to that belly. Her belly will actually sprawl out when she's lying on the ground.

I'll try to post a pic at some point today. My laptop is virused up so it may or may not work for me.

A Taylor digital scale works like a charm. If she had a new weight gain, I have a pregnant hedgehog now so what you said makes my concerned. Does she have noticable teats (nippes)? Look at her underbelly, not quite sure if she sounds overweight or pregnant. The fat roll just makes me wonder. Normally hedgehogs do not increase in weight wildly unless they are pregnant, but then again I am no vet. Hmm. Try to look for teats.
