Default Preventing Self-Mutilation

Hello, I have a one-year old hedgie named Boo. Last night I discovered that one of his back feet was very swollen, and mangled. I took him to the vet's office and they found that he had several tiny hairs wrapped tightly around his foot.
He's now home, but his foot is still raw and swollen. The gashes on his foot are very deep. Aside from keeping him clean and giving him antibiotics, the vet told me I need to be watching for self-mutilation of that back leg.
Since he's been home he has attempted to inspect his foot on his own, but I was able to redirect him.
What can I do to help make this recovery process easier on him? Any advice on how to keep him from aggravating the injury?
Thank you

Did they give you anything for pain? Many times they will chew on an injury if it's painful.

Yes, they gave me antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and pain killers for him to have once daily
