Default Help! Mites or quilling??

I have been a hedgehog owner for 1 week and 1 day. I've done a lot of research on this and am stumped.
My hedgie has been losing quills, not a lot, I've actually only noticed 1-2 in his cage on three different occasions, however I've only had him three days. I can hear him scratching , not a lot, just occasionally with the exception of last night, but I also put him in a new cage last night. His skin doesn't seem to be red or flaky and I do not see anything moving on his bedding. I was worried about mites but he doesn't use shavings in his cage. His previous owner did give me Aspen shavings thy I use in his litter pan. He was 9mos old when I got him a week ago, could he be quilling?? I read They quill around a year of age. Other than what's listed everything else seems fine, he doesn't seem miserable and he's very active.

Hedgehogs will loose the occasionally quill. If you haven't found but 1 or two, that isn't much.

Would you consider his scratching frantic, and often. Or is it more of a lazy scratch and maybe more frequently heard around the time he has just woken up and has started to get active for the night? I ask because some hedgehogs will scratch just after they wake up. I think they do it to comb their quills, and because it just feels good. Frantic scratching tends to be more mite related.

Its only when he's up in the night, not during the day while he is sleeping. And yes most is when he has only been awake for about an hour. He's itching isn't frantic at all. I didn't think about him combing his quills, I've been reading a lot of forums on here, it's so helpful!

Sounds like that may just be part of his wake up routine then. I've had several over the years that the first thing they did was to have a good old scratch before they would run on their wheels or do too much at all. Two of my current three do it, I think the 3rd might but its not as obvious.

If you start to see flakey skin, build up around the base of quills, or a lot more quills falling out, then I would suggest a veterinary visit, otherwise he sounds fairly normal to me.
