If you're talking about a heating pad like this - http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... Id=2752652 I wouldn't suggest using those with anything. They've never really looked safe to me, though I have one I used for a very brief time with a baby chickadee. If you're looking for a heating pad, I'd recommend the one I have - http://cozywinters.com/shop/kh-1060.html I've only had it a month or so, but haven't had any problems with it so far.

This shouldn't be your planned heating set up though. Heating pads only heat the floor of the cage, not the air, so they're not really good to be the only heating source. CHEs are the most preferred heating set up, though many people use space heaters as well. There's more information on heating options here - viewtopic.php?f=8&t=4579 Since you're getting a baby, you shouldn't really need a heating pad if you have some other sort of heating set up. Usually only sick or older hedgies need one for extra heat.

A CHE should be all that we will probably need. We keep the apartment around 75. How do you regulate the temp with a CHE? If you are using a thermostat with a probe where do you put the probe in the cage so that the hedgehog doesn't nibble on the probe or the wire?

You do need a thermostat to regular the CHE. I use this one - viewtopic.php?f=48&t=14903 You'll also want a thermometer in the cage, just to make sure the temp is staying pretty steady. I'm not exactly sure where you'd want to put the probes...I've never had an issue with my Lily trying to bug them. Unless your new hedgie turns out to like interior decorating (moving all her stuff around at night), perhaps putting it behind the wheel or her igloo might keep her away from it?
