Ideas for Multi-level C&C Cage- Opinions Wanted! :)

Hi Everyone,
With the addition of little Egon this weekend, we will have 3 hedgehogs in our home. Right now, they all have their own cages but I'm looking for a way to save space since they all share a room which also doubles as a guest room. I was thinking of possibly building a C&C cage with multiple levels but I have a few concerns.

1) I love the idea of this (taken from the setup thread-page 2) but how exactly and where would you attach CHE's to this type of setup? The CHE lamps I have do not have holes in the bulb part of them but is it possible to drill holes? Without drilling holes, is there a better way?

2) I believe the Carolina Storm Wheels are a little too big to fit in the C&C cages but please correct me if I'm wrong. If a modification is needed, would it be an easy one for this type of setup?

Please let me know as I'm open to suggestions and ideas.
Thanks! :D

Just checked my C&C cage/CSW and on the lowest setting the CSW will fit with just a little room left. I don't know anything about a CHE so I can't help you there. Since your hedgies have their own room maybe you could get a good space heater?

Thanks Larry!
You know I can't give up my wheels! lol Great to know about the height! That's awesome!!
Yea, it's difficult to regulate the temp in my house with a space heater. I tried last winter but my house is terribly insulated and so the temp fluctuated too much even having it in the one room. I do have one as a backup though. :D I'm just afraid we're going to have a super cold winter like last year and want to be sure they are nice and warm if I change anything around.

I agree with Larry about the space heater idea. I think a space heater is also less expensive than enough CHEs to heat 3 cages.

That set up looks way too top heavy and cumbersome to clean. I'm astonished that they used only factory connectors and not zip ties to hold it all together. If you stack them 3 or 4 high (to keep one off the floor) you might have to anchor it to the wall.

I wouldn' recommend stacking more than 3 high, maybe look into a ferret nation set up. They are great for multi-hedgie homes :)

The cubes are very very lightweight, i was surprised at how much a 3 panel by 2 panel cage with coroplast weighs. No more than my Christmas tree storage bins.

Kenzi, Do they make 3 level Ferret Nation cages? That would be pretty perfect. I keep looking but only find ones with 2 levels and don't want to have to completely go overboard trying to modify it.

Maybe I just need a better space heater. I have just a small one from Walmart so I could always get a better one and try it out. :)

The cage would only be 3 high, though I guess I could technically do 2 high in one spot and one high next to it~ if that makes any sense. It's just that going vertically is my best bet. Why would it be cumbersome to clean? I just imagine you'd create a "door" on each level using one or two cubes to open when you need to clean (though now that I look closer, I'm not quite sure how the one below opens  ). LOL I guess that's why I'm asking before I make any attempt at building it. Hmmm decisions decisions.

Thanks for the input~ I really appreciate it!!

Okay, the only place I can find a 3-level Ferret Nation is through this site below and it's pretty costly. :?

Yeah its going to cost probably 300 or so for a three story setup. I don't think they really sell the 3 story kit, but any Ferret Nation can be made into three stories, all the cage units are designed exactly the same, there is the 141/142 base model that comes with the legs and shelf, and then the 143 unit that is an 'add-on'. The only difference is design is that the add-on unit has a ramp hole built into the plastic tray and wire floor to allow access to the bottom cage. Mine I used that wire cage floor as the ceiling on the add-on unit, leaving the original solid ceiling on the base model, then used choroplast to fill in the 'gap' in the plastic tray, zip tied down.

So you'd be looking at buying the double unit with an addition add-on unit. Roughly $230 plus I think the addon is $130 for the add-on, so $360 total plus shipping cause they are heavy. You could in theory even split a double unit into 4 units by adding a floor in the middle, but the CSW is taller than half the cage, so either someone would be without a wheel or using something like a flying saucer. You could split the top cage by leaving the ceiling off but you're only going to get maybe 6 inches worth of wall space, plus these suckers are tall just as a double unit, I probably got a 7 foot ceiling in here and a third unit would not fit.

Thanks Puffers!
The Ferret nation seems to be a great cage (the more I look, the more I like it) but I'm not sure I'm willing to spend that kind of money right now considering I don't technically need it. Though, I understand it would be an investment for the long run so I'm seriously weighing my options. I think I need to actually see the C&C grids and a Ferret Nation in person before I make a decision for what's best for me.
Thanks again guys for all your help! :D

Walmart sells FN's online at the lowest price I have personally seen, maybe it could help you, Mel. Here is the link to the single unit: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Midwest-Pets- ... d/14317988
And here is the double unit: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Midwest-Pets- ... d/14948199
