Default Building my first cage! A question about siding?

Hi everyone,

Im getting my baby next week and am working building her a home. I have decided to do the wire storage box idea as it is easy to build and expand on when shes bigger

I am having some difficulty dealing with what to put on the floor and walls so she cant climb out. I see some people have used coroplast (Does anyone know where to get this in Canada?) but I am having difficulty finding that. Are there any other materials that people use that I have missed?

Also, how tall should the siding be so she can't climb up and hurt herself?

Thank you so much!

I bought my coroplast from a local sign maker. They sell 8X4ft sheets for about $40 here. I live in Ontario. Just go to any place that makes signs and ask them.

Rona and Home Depot both sell coroplast. It's under $20 for a 4'x8' sheet.

I googled both of them and didn't find any coroplast, but I am going to try and call them too.

Do hedgies have the upper body strength to pull themselves over if it is 4"? Also, are they fastened in, or just leaned up against the side?

Hey Erica

http://www.guineapigcages.com/howto.htm

This site is very helpful I think

I recommend using zip ties (instead of the connectors) to secure the grids in place so that they hold well, as the connectors are sometimes stubborn, and sometimes too loose. Then clip off the remaining strip so that nothing will poke the hedgies.

When you do it this way, you have a bottom and sides that fit inside of the grids.

I have my floor and sides as one piece and cut the corners out and perforate the bottom for bending purposes and I do zap strap mine in place so there is no way to pull it down or it falling down and then they can't get stuck. I don't think they have the strentgh to pull themselves up over the 4 inch side. My boy will stand there holding onto the cage above the siding but never seems to get his back legs up. Someone else may be able to answer the strength question better.

Yes, a lot of hedgies could easily climb 4 inches. I think its recommended to do 8 to 10 inches for a C & C but its been awhile since I researched it so I could be wrong. For the mods I did on my Ferret Nation cage the first one I did was 8 inches on the wall but I was so happy when I did 10 when I got my baby hedgie because she can climb very well. I noticed too that some hedgies are deceptively tall and when they stretch out to climb it can be surprising. They look clumsy but some can be extremely agile.

Good luck building your cage, I can't wait to see it. Besides getting to see actual hedgie pics, getting to see peoples creative set ups is my second fav

Wow Kenzi thanks! We never thought of doing it as one piece, I was just going to cut four separate sides so that is excellent! I'm still looking around for ideas. I think I will do 8" sides because I don't want to risk her getting bigger and being able to escape

I went out and bought most of my supplies last night, I am so excited!

If you got a Home Depot near you, they carry Coroplast, I just wish I could tell you were it is (since all the stores are laid out the same). Its all the way in the back, a few isles right of the actual lumber in around the isles with the windows, at least in my store it was located right the end of the one of the isles.
