My new hedgie Oakley, whom I recently rescued from my local SPCA 2 days ago, came with one of those plastic/wire zoo zone cages.
![]() It was a bit of an impulse rescue, and even though I knew I had all the essentials at home before I rescued him ( food, water, extra wheel, litter, heat lamp, heat bulb, thermostat, liners) the one thing I didn't have set up is a cage. I was planning on whipping him together a C&C cage and getting him out the zoozone cage within the next few days, but then I discovered that midwest makes a wonderful cage that's actually cheaper for me than building a C&C. I've been trying to get a hold of one (see other post: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=5427) and have a pet store trying to get me one in 2-3 weeks but am trying to find another place I can get one sooner. My question is: is the zoozone cage OK to use till then? I know it's way too small, and the ventilation isn't the best, but I've been letting Oakley out for a few hours each night to run around, and I'm using liners instead of shavings so it's not dusty. If not, any other suggestions for a better temporary cage? I was thinking sterlite bin maybe, but I hate using them with heat lamps cause I'm always worried about melting plastic. Any thoughts?

Thanks Nancy and Hedgieonboard, I was starting to worry a bit when they told me it might be a few weeks before I can get the cage. I let Oakley run to his heart's content around my entire room (hedgie proofed) every night though so I think he gets enough exercise. He runs on his flying saucer wheel every night too in the cage so hopefully he'll be happy till the new cage comes.

From observing previous threads about this (or similar) cages, I think the North American verdict is that it's alright as a temporary cage. There are many UK owners though who use it as the main cage.
I'm on the verdict of a temp cage, but thought I would post the UK observation to be fair. |
