Default C&C cage question

Hi, I've been reading a lot from this site for the past two weeks. We adopted our little hedgie this past Saturday and decided to make him a c&c cage. We could only find 8x8 squares, we couldn't find the recommended 9x9.

Our hedgie is about 15 months old and is on the larger size, not overweight but far from petite.

Is this acceptable? The coroplast sides will go up 10 inches.

Thanks for any advise you can share

I wouldn't. There is too much risk of hedgie getting stuck.

You can also use wire shelving to make a cage and IMO, it is far superior to cubes and because the wires are vertical, no risk of climbing.

If you build the coroplast high enough (10"-12" sides) I would think the 8X8 squares would be fine as they are being used as structural support for the coroplast.

Thank you, that's what I did! The coroplast comes up to about 10 1/2 inches and I also built a cover.

I was a little upset to read that C&C cages are no longer considered safe, since I have spent A LOT of time reading this forum and researching. Looking at every post from the "cage setup examples", I really thought this was one of the best ways to make a big enough enclosure for our little prickly friends.

That's the trick with exotics -- what's considered "best care" this year may have totally changed from three years ago! A lot of it ends up coming down to personal judgement, circumstances, and available materials. C&C certainly has many people currently using them who love their flexibility and affordability. For my situation, they'd be frustrating as I don't have the tools to modify them enough to fit my needs, so bins work great. With people who have multiple hedgehogs, having commercial cages with repeating similar setups might ease the cleaning/maintenance load. Someone is even trying out flexariums this year, a net-and-PVC style enclosure.

The biggest safety risks of a home are something where your hedgehog can escape, can get injured while attempting to escape, or is inadequately heated. If all those are dealt with, then it all comes down to "what is best for my situation?" not "what is the best thing ever for everyone?" It sounds like you're paying attention and being aware of the possibilities, so if it turns out something doesn't work in quite the way you'd envisioned, you can modify it until it works!
