Two hedges in one cage...
We've been considering getting our second hedge since Spiff has been a complete angel. We think since he likes to play around with his stuffed animal hedgehog, we should get him a friend. I was thinking about housing Spiff and the new (possible) female together. Yes, I know, he would try to mate and then eat the babies, but Spiff isn't sexually mature yet. Is it ok to have them in the same house BEFORE they are old enough to mate?

Also, Spiff has grown alot. We need to get him a new cage, and I was thinking a 2 story ferret cage (4' x 2.5'). Is this a good idea?

Re: Two hedges in one cage...
No, it is absolutely not possible to house them together. Spiff *is* sexually mature. If the girl is old enough to be living with you away from mom, she's old enough to get pregnant. It is very likely they would fight, and then you would have to have two of everything after anyways. The girl would get pregnant so young that her growth would be stunted and it would be very dangerous for her to be pregnant/giving birth.

Ferret cages can work but they are difficult to modify to be safe. You'll have to enclose every level and ramp, and make sure the floors are covered if they are wire. Some ferret cage work well, some don't. Also keep in mind a lot of hedgies want nothing to do with a second floor. Hedgies need horizontal space, not vertical.

Re: Two hedges in one cage...
any hedgie that is old enough to wean is old enough to be sexually mature..so if Spiff has been away from his mom for more than a few days....he is old enough to breed a female..and females can be sexually mature from as young as 6 weeks, but becoming pregnant at that early age is both dangerous and unhealthy. From what I remember Spiff is over 6 months old...which is when some breeders start using males in their breeding program, he is definately sexually mature. Male hedgies don't need company, in the wild they are solitary animals. Two males housed together will fight most of the time, usually to the death. If you want a second hedgie you need to keep it seperate, not even allow play time between the two. Sometimes 2 female hedgies can live together, but alot of times they can't, but males can't have a playmate.
