Unhappy Potential first time hedgehog owner with cage questions.

So I've really been looking into getting a hedgehog as a pet for my condo. They are small, cute, and apparently don't smell. Seems perfect for me.

Anyways, cages! I was thinking of going the Sterilite container method. I was wondering if one these 70 quart containers is big enough, or if I should attempt to PVC pipe two smaller (56 quart) containers together. Both look tall enough that escape doesn't seem like an issue, so would I still need a roof or some kind?. If I do need to connect two, what is a good way of carving a hole that won't result in jaggy sharp plastic bits a hedgehog could get hurt on? Also, how big should the pipe be to avoid a hedgehog from getting stuck? And finally, if I go with a CHE heater, do I need to worry about the plastic melting/becoming soft/etc?

Thanks in advance! I'll probably have more questions later on.

I dont think the 70 quart is big enough, if you look at the dimensions it is actually quite small, I think you need to look for the ones that are flatter but longer. If you do end up getting 2 smaller containers you can youtube how to carve it and what tool works best, I have seen several people with tutorials on how to make a safe hedgehog container.
I do think that with a CHE you would have to worry about the plastic melting or becoming brittle.

if using Sterilite bins, I would definitely want to join the largest containers that I had space for. I've never drilled 4"+ holes in Sterilite, which is what you would need, only 1" holes, so don't know what people use for that. A 4" or better hole cutting bit wouldn't be cheap. Sterilite can be brittle, so you'd have to watch that. If 'twere me, I might use a mini-jigsaw and cut a hole for a coroplast tunnel (that is something that I know how to do).

Escape is always something to keep in mind. You'd be surprised. A hedgie can be on top of their igloo house in second. That's halfway right there.

CHEs get extremely hot on the first firing. I would use a wire grid for the lid - two birds, one stone, and all that.

Minimum bin size is 110 QT. I know some people even use the larger Christmas tree boxes and connect those. You can connect 2 of them with 4" PVC pipe. Use a heat knife/soldering gun to carve out the circles. The heat will melt the plastic instead of sawing through it. Do this outside because of the toxic fumes. I'd use a metal shelving on top to hold the CHE. Or cut out the tops and hot glue screening to the tops.
