Default Best Cage Money Can Buy in the US

Hi Everyone,

I'll be getting my hedge in the next few weeks and want to be prepared well for his arrival. I purchased the Critter Nation cage and made a custom tray with high sidings for it, but I was told that's too small.

What do you recommend I buy? Space is not an object, and money is not an object. What's the absolute best cage to buy in the US (ideally online so I can get it shipped to my home)?

Thank you!

Hey Martin! So exciting to hear about your future addition. There’s sooo much we could say on this topic, but here’s my two sense.

If you’re looking for something premade/no work/easy, I’d recommend a Midwest Guinea Habitat. It’s 8 square feet, which is a good sized cage for a hedgehog, it’s easy to assemble, cheap, and can be attached to additional enclosures if you’d like to expand in the future. This is what I currently have for Christina, so I’m personally a big fan. (I also recommend going to chewy.com since you’re in the USA to find as many supplies as you can at the best price with free 1-2 day shipping).

If you’re into diy, c&c enclosures are awesome! It’s a build it yourself kind of deal; you’d get the wire panels and clips to design the layout however you’d like and you could use something as simple as a coroplast sheet to line the bottom and sides. I don’t have much experience with these kinds of set ups, but I’ve heard it tends to be cheaper in the long run especially if you ever want to upgrade the size/change the layout!

Feel free to ask any other questions you have on here, and search through the site to read more about specific topics already discussed 🙂

I’d definitely recommend C&C cages over the midwest; they’re the largest commercially available enclosure you can buy. You can chose to make one yourself, or you can order a kit online that is super easy to put together. A 3 x 2 C&C is the minimum, but i’d recommend choosing at least a 4 x 2 C&C (or larger). Hedgehogs are super active animals and will appreciate the extra space! Just keep in mind that the larger your set up, the more heat set ups you may require - if the room your hog is in isn’t warm, a room heater is often required (in addition to a heat lamp) to keep temps stable.
