Default Is an aquarium ok?

I am in the process of getting all my supplies ready to become a first time hedgie owner (no grown adult should be this excited over something so prickly... but I am!). Anywho, I have a 40 gallon aquarium from when I owned gerbils and have been researching on if that will be ok for my hedgie and have found conflicting answers. Some people say it's great because it's easier to maintain temperature than it is in a "barred" cage. Others say that it gets too moist for hedgie to be comfortable. In addition to wondering what the pros and cons are for an aquarium I am also wondering if it would be OK for me to use a reptile heating lamp for a heat source. I know many people have said no, because it could fall over but I have made a lid out of wood a chicken wire (which the hedgie will not be able to get near, to no splinters or pointy objects to worry about) so if the lamp were to fall over, it would fall on the lid. Is that ok?

Thanks so much, in advance, for your advice. My future hedgie and I appreciate all suggestions and comments!

Aquariums are actually one of the things we usually recommend against. There is no proper ventilation and no way to create more, also, they are usually too small. Hedgehogs require at least 2 square feet of space to roam AFTER supplies are put in. There are many other better options for housing hedgies, and quite a few that are very affordable. As for heating, Ceramic Heat Emitters are the preferred unit for heating, since they provide only heat and no light. Hedgies need a constant heat source to prevent hibernation attempts. They also require 12-14 hours of light each day for the same reasons, which can be accomplished by having a simple desk light attached to a timer. If not a CHE, then a space heater is the next best thing. There are a few good posts you should read up on here in the housing section that will give you plenty of good cage examples From Rabbit cages, ferret/critter nations. C&C, vivariums, and other such things.

I would say nope nope nope. Unless it's a 40 gallon breeder with no top on it. (thatd work good) if it's a 40 gallon tall, it'd be too tall and not have good ventilation. Hogs don't usually need lids unless you dont keep them entertained and they get bored and try to get out, or if you have another bigger animal that could hurt them. In which case, I'd recommend an actual cage so there's ventilation while he's still safe

Can you lift it, to clean it? Without breaking it?
Something I wonder is, can you get ALL the gerbil pee out of the corners & creases? And if not, how will that affect your hedgie?

It is not a tall aquarium and as I said the lid is made of chicken wire so air can come from the top. The breeder here in North Texas recommends that you use aquariums. I've read the page on the forums but there are so many conflicting opinions that I really don't know what to do. The aquarium is not very tall... maybe a foot and a half?... and the chicken wire allows for some air flow up top. Being that it's 40 gallons, it has more space than the cages at the pet stores. Why would the breeder tell me it's fine if so many of you seem to disagree?

I can lift it pretty easily and I have a scrub brush that allows me to get into all the corners. I used it to clean the cage really well when I had my gerbils.

There have been quite a few cases of hedgehogs rubbing their noses raw against the glass of aquariums. It seems that since they can't see the glass, unlike bars on a cage, they keep trying to go through it. Many breeders recommend things that aren't healthy or even dangerous things for their babies because they don't know better. There have been breeders recommending wire wheels, multi-level cages, hedgehog food and alot of other dangerous stuff. Just because one breeder recommends something doesn't mean its safe.

Aquariums are made to hold aquatic pets not mammals. They hold in urine fumes because there is no cross ventilation.

Aquariums are made for reptiles , amphibians, and fish. Not so much hedgehogs. I would highly recommend against it. I have cage options here. And I rate them on different factors. It might be helpful. http://cutequills.webs.com/hedgehog-care

An aquarium will be a pain in the ass to clean and maintain. Your hedgie will be much happier in a cage.

I never had an issue cleaning it with my gerbils but if it is jeopardizing my hedgies health then, obviously, I won't use it lol.
