Default Housing Questions... New Hedgie Mom

Still doing research before I buy my hedgie... I have a Critter Nation cage, and I've seen several pics of Ferret Nations, but I didn't know since the CN have horizontal bars, if that would encourage climbing and subsequently increase chances for injuries? I no longer have the shelf because my rats ate the plastic part to it and I didn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to get a new one. I was also worried if she climbs that, if I have the CHE lamp on top, she'll burn herself. Also as far as the lighting goes, my animal room is in the finished part of the basement, but doesn't have a window, so I was going to get a lamp and put it on a timer to give all the animals light 12 hours a day. Are there certain types of bulbs I should use? Now for the liner question... If I use fleece, won't her quills get caught on it? Same goes for fleece beds. That is my biggest fear.

You can solve the climbing problem by putting in coroplast walls on the bottom 8-10 inches of the cage, inside the bars. It creates a solid wall that they can't climb.

No, fleece doesn't get caught on their quills, except for maybe occasional lint balls, but those you can just pluck off with your fingers.

What wattage CHE bulb should be used? 150 watt? Should it be placed over the sleeping area?

You can also use plastic placemats to weave into the bars to help prevent climbing. Most hedgehogs won't be adventurous enough to climb, especially if they have a wheel to keep them busy, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Usual wattage for CHEs is either 100 or 150 watt and it depends on your situation for which one is best. If you already keep your animal room relatively warm (say around 70), and you're planning to keep the cage to around 75, a 100 watt should be fine, I think. You can just put it in the middle of the cage and it should keep the whole heated pretty evenly.
