Default How tall should the sides of cage be?

I am planning my things to build a C&C cage. About how tall ( in iches ) should I make the sides so my future hedgie can't get out? I was planning about 4 inches for the coroplast siding.

A minimum of 6" is recommended but that has often not been enough for very determined hedgies. I know many people go all the way to the top.

8" for the coroplast. If you're only doing one row of grids, you'll need a top.
Also, make sure that the crates are the ones with nine squares across, not five.

Depends on the hedgie.

Satin, when trying to escape a bath was able to stretch 12" up the sides of a plastic container, grab hold of the edge, and pull herself out. We're talking vertical solid plastic; no footholds until she got up the rim. Frankly, I was amazed and probably would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. She never climbed the walls of her house though.

When Tex first came home, he was in a plastic bottom, wire-top cage. The plastic bottom went up about 6". Each morning, I'd find poopy paw print evidence that this little gymnast had made it past the 6" plastic part and crawled right up to the very top of the walls and pawed at the wire ceiling. After a couple months, he's decided to run on his wheel for fun instead of climbing the walls. When I had to take his wheel out due to a cut on his foot, I had to put him in a Sterilite tub that was about 1.5 feet high so that he couldn't climb. Though he definitely tried... found pawed poop marks up about a foot from the tub floor.

Given that, if I had ever built a c&c cage for Tex, I'd make sure to build walls over a foot tall. For Satin, she'd probably be fine at 6". Am not sure what you're hedgie will be like... but thought I'd offer my story as food for thought.
