Default Big Enough Cage?

Is a cage that is 20 by 40 inches big enough for a hedgehog? It is the cage that I was given with Luis, and I know that it seems large to me, but I have never owned a small pet before. I take him out a couple times a day, but should I get him a larger cage?

Yes, it's big enough since you're right at 4 square feet -- which is the minimum I, personally, recommend. Some people recommend 2 square feet as the minimum, but I think that's too small for a primary habitat in most situations. (That is the size of my emergency/travel enclosure, though.) Just keep in mind that however big it is, you're shooting for roughly 3/4 of it to be "cluttered" with hides, tunnels, toys, etc. Fitzgerald's hutch has 8 square feet of floor space and includes 2 hides, a sleep sack, 2 tunnels, a dig box, a wheel & litter pan, his food & water dishes, and a few toys.

Another factor is the actual square footage of the floor space.
Not sure if the 20x40 was a manufactures listed size or measurements you took.
The size the manufactures list is at the largest part of the cage, on a tote it is the very top, on a tubby cage it is generally around the top of the tub part with the little lip.

I measured the inside area myself. I currently have one igloo, one wooden hide, food and water bowls, his wheel, and a few little cat toys inside. Is that enough?

You're probably okay, but it's hard to say without seeing a picture -- partly because sizes of hides and such vary and partly because I'm truly terrible at visualizing size.

But it's not an exact science anyway. The three-quarter rule is mostly to ensure they feel safe enough with plenty of places to hide and blend in and plenty of things available for enrichment since they spend their most active hours in their cages.

If you want to double check that it doesn't just look more cluttered than it actually is, group everything together and see how much floor space you have left. I thought my hutch (8 square feet) was cluttered enough, but when I did that, I discovered I had to add an extra tunnel and a few more toys. Now I know it needs to look a bit over cluttered to me.
