Unhappy Hedgie no longer loves me

I got my Hedgie as a baby and she has always been very friendly. Then she hurt her foot and infection spread to her leg. She came very close to losing her foot and she required daily doctoring 3 X a day for almost 2 weeks. I know during that time she was in a lot of pain and treatment was uncomfortable, so I held her only long enough to get the job done and returned her too her cage. Now she is better, but she seems to have a totally different attitude. She is NO longer friendly when I take her out of her cage. I sit every night and hold her but now she has her quills up and is jumping and hissing or rolling in a ball the entire time she is out. She won't even come out of her defense mode long enough to take a treat. She no longer trusts me or wants to be held and My question is : is she ever going to be my sweet friendly baby again ? or does she now associate me with pain?

It takes a lot to earn a hedgehogs trust, i'm sure she will come around. I've had my hedgehog for 5 months(he's 7 months) and he still doesn't fully trust me, but he's a lot more trustful of me than a month or 2 ago, just give her some time, she might still be a little hurt from it all.

I agree. I don't think hedgehogs are really capable of loving us the way a dog would. They don't miss us when we aren't there, they just like familiarity of one person (through scent)

She will come around eventually... she just needs time

She probably just associates play time with meds and treatment. I would say just bond with her like you did before she hurt her foot. Its lik starting over but I think she will come around
