Default baby pooping while eating...Normal?

I got my little emma about a week ago, they told me she was 4 weeks old, (pet store), but im pretty darn sure shes older than that cuz she was 222 grams yesterday when i weighed her, so my guess is shes actually 7or8 weeks. Does this sound about right? On to the topic though, she keep pooping and peeing next to her food, i presume shes doing it while eating cuz its right where her butt is while she eats. This is pretty much the only place she goes to the bathroom aside from here wheel, there is only a small one here or there between food and wheel. there in opposite corners of cage. Is this normal?

due to this, i have actually placed her food in her litter box, is this a bad idea? kinda figured if she stopped doin this i could move it and try to train her to go in it elsewhere.

From the size of her I'd say she's 7+ weeks, though I'm not an expert on babies, but if she was 4 weeks, she'd probably still be very tiny in size, usually babies are not weaned until 6 weeks, and then sold by the 7th week (1 week to make sure they adjust being alone in their own cage). Its hard to determine age by weight, I had a 1 year old girl who was 230 grams (Vera-Lee[RIP]) at best, now I have a 600 gram girl (Hester, baby got back).

I can't say if its normal, but Vera use to always poop and pee while she was eating. So you're not alone in that sense, but see what everyone else thinks.

She shouldn't have been sold at 4 weeks so I HIGHLY doubt that she would even be sold because she wouldn't be eating solid food at that stage. They just START to wean off milk at that age. To answer your question, yea they poop everywhere and it doesn't bother them at all. I was lucky enough this morning to find a "Present" in the food bowl. The babies sit in the food bowl when they eat. I'm still trying to figure out which one it was because one is litter trained, two poop all over and one poops solely by or in the food bowl. If I were you I would just take his poops and put it in the litter box. Then move his food slowly farther and farther away from the litter pan so that he knows the two are not related to each other lol. hopefully that helps. Make sure you keep some poops in there so he recognizes the smell. Some hedgies refuse to be potty trained though. So you might just have to do it the way you are doing it.

puffers, thanks for the thoughts on age, she is definitely weaned cuz she eats like a pig, and she appears to have just gone through a quilling before i got her because since i got here she has lost a couple of quills but appears to have a bunch coming in right now, so i guess i will get a better idea on age if she quills again, hoping she just finished her 6 week quilling. it does appear as though she still has some baby quills, but not sure what that means

as for the pooping. im glad it seems that its common for hedgies to poop next to their food. Pooka, thanks for the idea with the food and moving it farther and farther away, but the problem is that its a corner litter box and theres nowhere to really move it, its either food in the litter box or in opposite corners.
