Default Am I allergic?

So, recently I have noticed small red bumps on my skin after I hold my hedgehog. I am assuming this is where the quills poke through my skin. This didn't happen before, and I am terrified I am allergic to them. I would never get rid of them, but it would make owning them a lot harder.

I get really itchy red bumps all over my hands. If I put cream on them, it helps. I don't have any other reactions, thankfully.

One more thing. This only happens when I hold one of my hedgehogs. I hoping it's something on their quills? I wash my hands before I pick them up and after.

How recently have you given them a bath? It could be that something on the hedgehog's quills is causing the reaction. Give them a bath tomorrow night & see if you still get the bumps afterwards. It may be that you need to wipe down the quills each night with a wet washcloth to see if that helps. It could also be that the quills are poking your hand and other allergens from the air are causing the itchy bumps since the quills open an access point.

I get the same itchy bumps where ever Titan's quills touch me. I am very careful how I handle him now.

I don't get any reactions on my hands, but if either of my hedgies have been laying on my chest I will get small bumps. They go away pretty quickly and don't hurt.
How long have you had your hedgies for? When did the bumps start appearing?

The bumps started appearing really recently, and only when I hold one hedgie. I'll bath her tomorrow night and see if that helps, or try the washcloth thing. I held her again tonight and the bumps didn't last long.

I've noticed too that the longer I have the hedgehog, the less my skin reacts.
I hope something works!

This may be the start of an allergy, or it may go away as quickly as it started. Only time will tell.

It is very common to have a reaction to certain hedgehogs and not others. Of the 4 I have right now, Samson is the one that affects me the most and he doesn't always. Now, I clean and handle him last so if my hands get itchy I'm done and can go and wash them off. Back when I had 30ish hedgehogs, I kept a box of baby wipes with me as I was cleaning and handling and would wipe my after I'd done someone that would cause a reaction.

Since you have two hedgehogs and only one bothers you, chances are it's not bedding, food or laundry soap related. Bathing her may help as might changing her bedding daily. The one who affected me the worst over the years was Smokey and it was his urine. He'ed put me into an asthma attack if I didn't clean his litter box daily.

Thank you all so much! I really hope this won't develop into an allergy, but if it does then I guess I will just have to be more careful when handling my girl.

Im allergic to most of my pets, whenever I hold my rats i get lots of red itchy bumps on my wrists, and they itchy soooo bad. Then after I got Penny, my hedgehog, I noticed some on my arms where her quills poked me, but they arent very itchy at all. Maybe skin just doesnt appreciate being pricked by quills? But at least you arent having issues breathing. Cleaning my rat cage is a pain because whe im clean it my nose gets runny/stuffy and i sneeze like crazy. Only when I clean it though, very strange.
