does anyones litter trained hedge free range?

while they are out of their cage they will go back and seek out their litter box like a cat? I had no luck with ferrets but i hear hedgies are good at this?

I already started in his cage

Yes they do. I have one hedgehog that specifically poops and pees on the right corner of my back veranda. No matter how much i bleach that area, she justs keeps coming back at it. Even if she doesn't get out of her cage in months, she still recalls the area. If i happen to close the door of that veranda, she will scatter her poop on the left side of my kitchen wall (and without fail)

mine went all over his wheel and sometimes pees near the food dish

I assume because hes a baby hes not really into using the box yet?

Some just become fixated with a certain "comfort zone" which can prove to be hard to break or switch. If yours is still a baby then he can still choose to change litter spots every now and then. Better get him hooked unto one spot while early :D

just by placing his droppings in the box?

I want to break him of the habbit of soiling his wheel at night he spends a lot of time on it and its going to muck up his feet

You're very unlikely to get him to not poop in his wheel. It's what hedgehogs do - they tend to potty on the run, and most don't really care if they do it on their wheel as well, even though it doesn't really go away like it would running outside in the wild. Very occasionally there's a hedgie that will stop & get off the wheel to poop, but it's not common. For most owners, daily wheel cleaning and foot baths to clean off poop is part of having a hedgehog.

Yeah, you can potty train, but you will never stop them going on their wheels. Some hedgies have to get on their wheels to do a poop!

But cleaning their feet is very easy, and I find it's a great excuse for bonding time getting them dried up after. Half an inch of warm water in the sink or tub, they will often paddle a lot of it off themselves. You can do stubborn bits with a soft toothbrush. Takes me and Hector maybe five minutes to get his feet clean, and I do it every 3 days or so, just because he has a tendency to crawl inside my clothes.... lol.

And then you get blanket cuddles!
