Default Newly adopted hedgehog

I adopted a hedgehog two days ago that had been surrendered by its previous owner. He is very overweight and has horribly long nails.

I have manage to calm it enough to trim nails slightly but am wondering how to get the hedgie into better shape.

Snuffy as I am temporarily calling it is currently in a 18x36 aquarium I had sitting around. Much better than the 16x24 cage he came in. In the next few days I plan to build a C&C cage for him to improve ventilation.

He came with an igloo and a flying saucer as well as hedgehog diet. I read the ingredients on the food and have decided to switch him over to a high quality cat food instead and give him occasional mealworms as a treat.

I look forward to talking to you all and learning all I can about my new family member.

Welcome to the forum! You're doing a fantastic job already.

I wouldn't worry too much about his weight right off the bat. If he's on a high quality food, in a bigger cage, and you're getting his nails trimmed down, all of that should help. I'm guessing he's not running much or at all if his nails are very long. Once they're shorter and easier to walk with, hopefully he'll start running again.

It might be worth getting an upright wheel and see if he prefers it. I'm not sure how easily an overweight hog might run on a Flying Saucer and there's concern from some people that the angle might produce joint problems after long-term use (but so far, no actual evidence of such). That could be made more likely if he's overweight. If you do want to try an upright wheel, the only safe one in pet stores is the Comfort Wheel. It'd be a good idea to clip it to the cage since it can be a bit wobbly to climb onto, especially for big hedgies. If you want a sturdier option, you can make or buy a bucket or cake cover wheel online, they're fantastic. One that has a little lip around the edges is nice because it helps prevent warping.

Glad you took this guy in! I'm sure we'll all be looking forward to updates as he settles in to a better life with you.

Here is the little fellow. The pic is dark as I didn't want to scare him with the flash.
