Default Do you clip ONLY the back nails?

I was told you only have to clip the back nails but I am having a hard time believing this. Can anyone inform me of the true answer so I don't end up hurting the baby.

That's the strangest thing I've ever heard.

You do have to clip both front and back nails...however I find the back nails tend to grow quicker/longer for my hedgies and need clipping more often, whereas the front nails stay relatively short and close to the quick so I only ever need to trim a little off. However, I have found the occasional super long front nail...so you definitely have to keep an eye on all nails!

Hope that clears up the confusion

I've had Pokey for almost 2 and a half years now and can only recall clipping his front nails once. Quillson is nearing a year now and he hasn't had his clipped at all. The front don't seem to grow quick at all but you should definitely keep an eye on them.

Hedgie nails grow at different rates but you have to keep an eye on all of them. I remember awhile back one of the members posted an awesome reference collage of pictures that I found super helpful for me.

I have two hedgies, and their nails differ. Stella's front nails rarely need to be clipped, but Rodney's need to be trimmed often. Make sure you look closely at the nails. If they go untrimmed they can grow into the paw. Also, regular trimming will keep the quick from extending further into the nail.

I went to look for the package my clippers came in but was unable to find it. The clippers I have are for small animals and have a hamster or guinea pig cover on them. I'm not sure if anyone else has these but they work really well for me, hopefully someone else will post though to make sure this is a safe recommendation because I wouldn't want your hedgie getting hurt

I have an infant nail clipper.... it worked well too. I had to shift his body to once side bc he wouldnt let me grab his foot haha. That was amusing in itself. I cannot even get near the front bc he balls right up. I will have to try different things eventually. Thanks for all your helps guys =)

Hmm... that's how I clip my hedgie's nails... when she's in a ball. I have her out, I put a kitchen towel over her, roll her into a ball with her tummy side up, place the handtowel/hedgie ball hedgie on my lap (the towel protects my legs from quill pokes), she relaxes a bit, extends a leg or two, then I hold onto a foot and clip front and back nails. Some nights I'm lucky to get just one nail, but usually, she'll let me get them all.
