Default new owner advice

Hi HHC, I am a proud new owner of a one year old hedgie, Dr Gonzo. I brought him home
today, and he's terribly nervous. I got him from someone who really wasn't taking care of
him (he didn't even have a wheel), and I'm hoping I can turn him into a happy hedgie.

Although I've done alot of research, especially on HHC, I still have a few questions. I'm
trying to find the best way to get him used to me, so he can stop huffing and puffing so
much. I gave him some mealworms, and a tshirt that smells like me. But every time I
make the slightest noise he starts getting really upset. Is there any other ways I can try
to calm him down?

Thanks!

Welcome to HHC and congrats on your new hedgie
If you just brung him home today i would say just leave him be for a day or 2 so he can get ajusted to his new home,he is probably very scared from the move hopefully he will come around in a few days.

Time and patience. He may come a long way but there will probably always be noises and movements that make him huff up. Good luck.

I got my hedgie Dexter about a month ago, he still quills up for certain noises, even noises like me sniffling because i've had a small cold/runny nose since the day I got him. Thats completely normal. It took him about 2-3 days to calm down with me....considering the fact that your hedgie has had a previous owner (depending on how they treated him) he may take longer because he is not as trusting, but I'm gonna say he will probably calm down if you treat him well.

My hedgie is also very calm right after a bath. Granted he is in no way calm DURING the bath (always trying to find an escape route), afterward he is happy to cuddle in my lap in a nice dry towel!

Also I would say let him explore where you are the most in your home, since your there the most he will get used to it and your smell (since your there the most), for me, its my desk *rolls eyes* (the downside to being a college student), so I let him explore my desk all the time and just watch him to make sure he doesnt fall!

I also do positive enforcement with Dexter, if he does something good, I give him a mealworm, never for anything else.
Examples:
When I first got him, if he came out of his ball I would give him one
When he poops in his litter box
When he crawls onto my hand without me having to pick him up or grab him
After vet visits (or during to calm him down and cheer him up)

Things like that, hope it helps!

Thanks for the replies.

He already seems to be getting more used to me. The mealworms REALLY
help. Hes not curling up anymore to the sound of my voice and when I
put my hand near him he actually comes up to sniff me.

So I have a really good feeling that eventually he'll love me. =)

Oh and about his owner..... He kept poor little gonzo in an aquariuam.
All he had in there was wood chips and an igloo. The guy loved his
hedgie but I don't think he really understood how to take care of one.
