Default My first hedgehog - help!

I got my first hedgehog - Louis - 2 weeks ago. He is 2 months old, healthy and eats a lot and he is allready potty trained

My problem is that Louis is very moody and he hates being bothered, when I pick him up in the evening. He hisses a lot, and curls up and tries to poke me

I really try to have a lot of patience, and respect him when he wants to be alone. I pick him up for about half an hour every evening, and I have done that for 2 weeks now.

Do you have any suggestions how to win his heart? He is not interested in the treats that I offer him when he curls out, he just run in to a corner of the blanket and hides

He sleeps on one of my t-shirts, and i think I have tried every trick on

I come from Denmark, which explaines my bad english. In Denmark, there is only 2 people who breeds hedgehogs, and we have no information in Danish at all.

I love Louis, and I really want him to love me back!!

Hilsen Line Emilie And Louis.

He is lovely.

It can take months for your hedgie to come round to you and get used to his new life and home. For a baby its very daunting as well and a bit scary. Just stick in there and keep doing what you're doing

With his age could he be quilling?
Quilling would make anybody grumpy
Keep trying and Good luck

My goodness he is so handsome!!!!!! He has not been with you very long. He needs more time to adjust. He is a scared little hedgie in a new home. But I am sure he will grow to love the T shirt and the treats too in time.

Welcome to the HHC forums!
As others have said, he is still getting used to you. Some may take a longer time to get used to their new home and new friend than others. It depends on the hedgie.
If he's 2 months old, it's also very likely that he's going through quilling, as LarryT said. He'll understandably be grumpy about it, and it may continue for a couple weeks yet. Just try to be patient and understand that it'll be a bit painful for him, with the new quills coming in. Try not to touch his back a lot, especially if he doesn't like it. Chances are that right now, he just doesn't like it because it hurts. Once he's through quilling, he may be more friendly and more willing to be pet.
Keep getting him out, but see if he'd be happy just sleeping in your lap in a blanket. If he seems to prefer to hide and sleep while he's out, maybe he'd be content sleeping on you if he has a nice blanket to cuddle up in. And it'll still help with socializing, as he'll come to recognize your scent through that, like with the t-shirt.
Good luck with your little guy, he's adorable!

Thank you very much for all the answers !

I appreciate your advice and I will keep on having patience. I will try not touch him on the back, and just leave him on my lap to snuggle in the blanket which I think he likes

Some nights he runs around on my lap and sniff to everything, but most of the time he just want to sleep.

I know from the things I read, that hedgehog have different personalities, and I hope you understand that what I meen with I want him to 'love me back' is that I want him to trust me and know that I dont want to hurt him.

Sometimes when he sits on my lap, he digs very hard in the blanket and bites it. Is it because he is tired of sitting on me, and want to go in his home?

Thank you again!!

Hilsen Line and Louis
