Red face Hedgie entertainment ideas

So my guy is SUPER adventurous. I take him out of his cage for at least 30 minutes a night, usuall a bit more. He has a set up with a fleece blanket, tubes, and snuggle sacks. I also put another fleece blanket and made a mound for him to climb over. He LOVES climbing, but knowing that they aren't too great at going down once up, I don't really have anything for him to climb besides that. (which he can walk over, not really even climb).

I feel like its getting a bit repetitive for him, so I would like to get a few more things to entertain his little brain. Any ideas?

Oh and he has his wheel of course, but really only uses it when in his cage because when out he like to explore and try to find ways to escape the enclosure lol

I made a maze for Martin which he loved. If you enclose an area and use hardback books, you can set the books on their sides and make maze walls.
Other ideas would be to put treats in a toy dump trick so he has to tip it over to play with, let him play with ping pong balls, or maybe make an obstacle course out of tubes?

Making a maze sounds fun. I tried balls and he doesn't seem too interested in them. I guess they don't cause as much destruction as he would like haha and he cant get under it.

I create little ramp-staircases out of books of varying height, shoebox-lids, CDs, boxes that end up being kinda like Mayan pyramids. The total height is really short (3"? 5"), and the height between individual steps is even shorter (1") that my little friend goes racing up and down. Just make sure nothing can slip-slide out from under him.

I sometimes put out neat smells -- bits of baked wood, fabric with a drop of essential oil, baby pumpkin, scraps of leather -- that he goes hunting for, sniffs, then totally ignores. Leather shoelaces were the coolest thing ever for a few months before he got bored of them.

My small friend is utterly fascinated by musical instruments & their accompanying accessories, so any of the crappier instruments can get laid down on the floor for him to explore. He seems to love brushing up against guitar strings. Maybe it's the noise (but I don't think he understands the cause-effect), or maybe it's just a nice vibration on his quills.

I really like Annie's interesting-smells idea! Reminds me of the scent enrichment zoos use for carnivores like big cats, wolves, etc.

I used to do hide-n-treat games with Lily, though mostly in her cage. I set up a little rock garden with a couple of silk aquarium plants, some small stuffed animals, a cut toilet paper tube, a small ceramic plant pot, etc. and hide treats around/in different things. Treats would be either frozen-thawed crickets, mealworm aliens (pupae), or various cat treats that I approved of the ingredients used. Lily loved it and it became a fun routine to hide everything, then put her back in her cage for the night and watch her make the rounds to each hiding place - she usually went once, ate everything, then went around one or two more times just to make sure she didn't miss any. You could try something like that, just out in the playpen instead.

My little guy like to climb all over my clothes, so at night I take out some clothes from my hamper and let him climb my mountain of clothes and he can burrow under if he wants to. Also side note. @Annie&Tibbers I'm digging the LoL name. XD

I had a 4-inch diameter cardboard tube that Gertie loved. She would go through it, then come out and push it to roll it across the playpen. But then she pooped in it, a LOT, and I couldn't get it clean, so bye-bye tube. I'd recommend a piece of PVC pipe instead.

Quilliam really only poops on his wheel (or around it). He kind of has a routine where he wakes up, eats/drinks, wheels/poops, eats a little more then wheels/poops and wheels on and off all night. So when I take him out he rarely ever poops unless he slept later than usual or if I interrupt his schedule. I still have yet to make a liter box but im not sure if im going to since I clean the wheel everyday anyway. Might as well just keep doing that.

@sphilly sometimes I do that with his extra (clean) fleece liners!
