Default Quilling and Poop Udate

Hi everyone. I wanted to update on my two hedgehogs who are now 6 months old.

My male, Lenny, has gained weight but is still much smaller than his sister Tanya. I will have to weigh them and be more accurate for you all.

Lenny completed quilling first. Tanya just finished. It took her almost 4 more weeks poor thing.

I have noticed a huge drop off in the amount of poop on their wheels. Sometimes I can even go two days before I have to clean the wheels.

The last two times I had Tanya out on her blankie on the couch she did not poop at all. I played with her for about 40 min. both times. She was not afraid at all and ate mealies from my hand, licked me, annointed slightly, climbed on my arm. She is very sweet and alert and active. Now that she is pooping less I plan to handle her much more.

Lenny still poops while I have him out. But I am PREPARED FOR POOP. He sits out on his blankie on the couch and I have paper towels and a plastic bag ready to catch or wipe the poop. I handle him and he also eats mealies with me etc.

As someone new to hedgehogs and I have stated this before: I did have a problem getting used to the poop on the wheel and pooping right on me. But I do see an improvement and their charm outweighs everything.

So sweet and funny.

Hi Hedgewawa

Just a question, how do you know when they have finished quilling, mine has started to quill this week, so i was just wondering how you know when they've finished it?

Good to hear they're both doing well. Yes the pooping is amazing. So much from such a little thing hehe.

Hi Pipkin, Well I could tell they stopped quilling because I am not finding tons of quills all over. As someone else said here at HHC it was looking like a hedgehog exploaded in there when I would go to give them new fleeces in their houses and just all around the cage. Now i only find a few quills. And there is way less poop. I was "poop shocked" there for awhile. Not ready for the quantity or consistancy but I've gotten past that now. So we are all having more quality time.

I can't wait for the poop production to taper off. Right now I have learned through trial and error that if I wake Quillbert up the best thing is to handle him for a few minutes and then let him go eat a bit and wheel for about half an hour. Then I can take him out wither fewer accidents. I don't mind being pooped on as it's fairly easy to spot and clean up. But I absolutely hate being peed on.
